On the top of the hill overlooking Pogradec there is an ancient Illyrian fortress believed to have been known as Encheleana.
During the Eighteenth century under Turkish occupation, the town became an administrative centre, but was largely destroyed ruing the World War I, again during the Italian-Greek War of 1940-1941 and twice during the National Liberation War (1941-1944); however a number of characteristic houses have been preserved as cultural monuments.

The objectives of this assignment were to increase the ability of the owners of chestnut plantations in two villages in Pogradec to profitably manage their plantations on a sustained basis, and to develop a strategy for future APFDP support to nut production in general throughout Albania.
Additional similar demonstration plots should be established in the Pogradec chestnut forest and in the other chestnut forests of this area by APFDP foresters and their cooperators.
Data collected by the DFS in Pogradec shows that during the period of 1972-1989, the average production of chestnuts in the district at 200-210 ton from a total area of 1067 hectares with the lowest of 4.4 ton in 1988 and the highest in 1972 with 343 tons.

The Greek consul, Garilidhis, hailed the cooperation of Pogradec local government with the leaders of the camp and reported that no incident is encountered in this camp during the time refugees were settled.
Ismail Muçiqi, one of the representatives of Kosove refugees, said before leaving the camp, that all the refugees accommodated in Pojske camp were attended with special care not only by the employees of the Red Cross, but even by the Greek ambassador in Tirane and the Greek General Consul in Korçe.
