Point Arena is a small coastal city located in (additional info and facts about Mendocino County, California) Mendocino County, California.
This is the location of the Point Arena Lighthouse, at 115 feet (34.5m) the tallest lighthouse on the West coast of the (North American republic containing 50 states - 48 conterminous states in North America plus Alaska in northwest North America and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean; achieved independence in 1776) United States.
The first European to record Point Arena was (A native or inhabitant of Spain) Spaniard Bartolomé Ferrelo in 1543, who named it Cabo de Fortunas ((The Romance language spoken in most of Spain and the countries colonized by Spain) Spanish for "cape of fortunes").

Along with a number of other Mendocino County coastal communities, Point Arena is associated with the hippy and subsequent counterculture groups, and its economy is largely geared toward servicing the summertime tourist industry.
This is the location of the Point Arena Lighthouse, at 115 feet (34.5m) the tallest lighthouse on the West coast of the United States.
The cape was renamed to Punta Delgado (narrow point) in 1775 by lieutenant Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra (commander of the schooner Sonora), part of a royal expedition chartered by the government of Mexico to map the north coast of Alta California.

Point Arena had enormous redwood forests that stretched from the hills to the ocean, and eventually fourteen saw mills were established in the immediate area.
It was in these circumstances that Ferrelo spotted a point which "was like a spur of land where the coast turned North Northwest." He named this spur "Cabo de Fortunas" (Cape of Fortune), as a testament to the difficulties encountered on this journey.
As Ferrelo observed, the land now known as Point Arena is a natural navigational landmark, with the direction of the coast changing from northwest to a more northerly direction as one travels to the south.
