A Breaking Point? by Butler Shaffer
At some point, a Rosa Parks may refuse to move to the back of a city bus and spark a civil rights movement.
I have long thought that the oppressive and destructive American political system will eventually reach a breaking point where the addition of one more intrusion upon the lives of people will produce a nonlinear reaction (i.e., a consequence out of all proportion to that singular factor).
It could, however, serve as a focal point for latent pressures that may have found expression in the sad fate of this woman.

The idea brewing inside the White House was to try to craft a "de-escalation strategy" that could walk both sides back to the point where they could at least talk peace.

Their point is not that we are running out of oil, per se; although as much as half of the world's recoverable reserves are estimated to have been consumed, about a trillion barrels remain underground.

The Mess That Greenspan Made: Breaking Point
But consider the costs of that stellar accomplishment -- a personal saving rate that has finally hit the “zero” threshold, debt ratios that continue to move into the stratosphere, and asset-led underpinnings of residential property markets that are now firmly in bubble territory.
Combine these increased fuel costs with the effect of rising short term interest rates on adjustable rate mortgages or other debt service such as ever increasing home equity lines of credit (used more and more to purchase expensive gasoline) and it's easy to see how making ends meet could get increasingly difficult.
It's easy to see how this could be a breaking point.

 Gottlob Frege
The latter consisted of a set of logical axioms (statements considered to be truths of logic) and a set of rules of inference that lay out the conditions under which certain statements of the language may be correctly inferred from others.
Frege made a point of showing how every step in a proof of a proposition was justified either in terms of one of the axioms or in terms of one of the rules of inference or justified by a theorem or derived rule that had already been proved.
As MacFarlane 2002 points out, one of Kant's most central views about logic is that its axioms and theorems are purely formal in nature, i.e., abstracted from all semantic content and concerned only with the forms of judgments, which are applicable across all the physical and mathematical sciences (1781/1787, A55/B79, A56/B80, A70/B95).

Sometimes, family and friends are the first to notice symptoms of stress, Fitzgerald said, and nurses should listen if those people point out changes in behavior.
It sounds simple, but one of the first things we identified was that nurses want to be allowed to take a break," said Anne Powell, RN, executive director of the Kentucky Nurses Association.
Other measures proving effective are better communication between nursing and support staff, contracts outlining employee expectations and more flexible work schedules.

 Duane Elgin: The Breaking Point
I picked up his new book, Promise Ahead: A Vision of Hope and Action for Humanity's Future, and began reading the first few chapters only to run headlong into a very cogent, very clear, and very devastating description of the state of our embattled world.
Indeed, as he laid out the daunting ecological and social challenges we face as an evolving species at this point in history, all kinds of dire scenarios of the future began to unfold in this reader's head, scenarios that were a lot closer to Blade Runner and Waterworld than Star Trek or The Jetsons.
What I did not know at the time, but would soon learn, is that Elgin, despite initial evidence to the contrary, is a profound optimist.
