point of presence (PoP) A site where there exists a collection of telecommunications equipment, usually modems, digital leased lines and multi-protocol routers.
An Internet access provider may operate several PoPs distributed throughout their area of operation to increase the chance that their subscribers will be able to reach one with a local telephone call.
The alternative is for them to use virtual PoPs (virtual points of presence) via some third party.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist
Supposing the truth of the Real Presence, this consideration might be open to discussion, inasmuch as the partaking of the Bread of Angels is really the foretaste of eternal beatitude and the anticipated transformation of earth into heaven.
The permanence of Presence, however, is limited to an interval of time of which the beginning is determined by the instant of Consecration and the end by the corruption of the Eucharistic Species.
The first, the only mode of presence proper to bodies, is that by virtue of which an object is confined to a determinate portion of space in such wise that its various parts (atoms, molecules, electrons) also occupy their corresponding positions in that space.

Point of presence (POP) for digital facsimile network - Patent 5739919   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The destination POP is local with respect to the destination fax machine, and the destination POP attempts to contact the destination fax machine to ascertain if a fax session is allowable.
How this is accomplished is not important other than to point out that it is a network of communications which allows point to point communications for devices on the network.
At this point, if a successful connection has been made to the destination facsimile device 12, the Faxjack 100 connects the transmit signal of the source facsimile device 10 to the outside phone line and the source facsimile device 10 begins to transmit data using facsimile modulation, signalling, and protocols.

I live in a fairly rural area of the United States, we have only one highspeed internet provider locally, and only two that provide dialup, but neither one have coverage for the entire county.
Here is my question: I am interested in knowing what it would take to start up a 'Point of Presence' if you will, DUN/RAS that would log people in to AOL (yuck) and other national providers.
I understand that I would need to contract with them to set this up, but a lot of people would like to have alternatives to the local brand of internet, whether they want faster or cheaper.
