		Pointe Aux Barques is one of the smallest townships in Michigan, consisting of only three partial sections at the tip of the "thumb" on the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.
		In the township the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 0.0% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older.

		Michigan is the only state that supports lighthouse preservation with a program of annual grants from the state to local preservation groups.
		The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society was formed in 2001 to support restoration of the light station.
		In 2002, the Big Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association was negotiating to lease the tower with the hope of opening it to the public in 2003; this does not seem to have happened.

		The Michigan Lighthouse Project, organized under the auspices of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, was founded by a group of about twenty-five lawmakers, representatives from state and federal agencies and lighthouse preservation groups seeking to save the beacons.
