A points race is a mass start track cycling event involving large numbers of riders simultaneously on track.
In this endurance race, points are awarded to the first five finishers of sprints.

Stories of David Teall - Points Race
If a rider with points falls back and gets lapped by the field, his points are used only to separate him from other riders who were also lapped by the field.
If in the same case a rider who finished with the most points got dropped off the back near the end of the race, if that points leader managed to finish without getting lapped, even though the field was breathing down his neck, he is the winner of the race.
All riders are eligible for points, unless, of course, there is another chase group that was in front of the main group but behind the lead group.

 POINTS RACING RULES FOR 2005
Most racers agreed that the 2005 points race was one of our best ever and were particularly heartened to see the number of new names in our top 10.
If a race is postponed and rescheduled for the next day or another weekend, points will still be awarded but only to those racers that actually line up for the first round of the rescheduled race.
A 30 point guarantee will generally be offered for a race that wasn’t held in the prior year, but in a case where there is little basis to expect a five car turnout, a new race may only have a 20 point guarantee.
