Poison Ivy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poison Ivy is a very attractive red-headed woman with green eyes (belonging likely to Celtic ancestry) who is obsessed with plants, botany and botanical toxicology as well as environmentalism and sees herself as one of "the world's most prominent eco-terrorists" (quote Gotham Girls).
Poison Ivy recently came to believe that her powers were killing the children she looked after, so she got Batman to reverse her powers and make her a normal human being once more.
Evidence for this is her ability to control what sort of poison her lips secrete (she has used types that were deadly, caused unconsciousness, created hallucinations, and put people under hypnotic control) and the fact that her skin is treated as toxic at some times, and harmless at others.

This is a very long way of saying that, although it certainly moved Barrymore from cute kid to sex symbol, ‘Poison Ivy’ is not sexploitation film its reputation (and sequels) might suggest.
For Coop’s sick mother Georgie, Ivy is an attentive surrogate daughter who is not embarrassed or threatened by another’s illness; for father Darryl, the newcomer is balm for his aging male ego and a source of increasing temptation.
Ivy has wavy blonde hair and sports stick-on tattoos of crosses on her thighs that billow as she swings like Tarzan on a rope over a ravine.

I highly suggest that you try and rent this film, just be sure that you get this version and not the earlier television film POISON IVY, which is a totally different film and is also on video cassette.
POISON IVY is released in two versions, an unrated version (which I believe is the European version) that runs for 93 minutes and contains explicit language, adult situations, and brief female nudity, and an R rated version that runs for 91 minutes and, I believe, is missing the scene of brief female nudity.
POISON IVY was released in the theaters back in March or May of 1992 when I was in New York, but was unable to see it at that time.

This fragile, symbiotic friendship between the two girls is the best part of the movie; it's also the purest part, and the only place where the film is driven more by the fresh spirit of its characters than by its hand-me-down thriller plot.
Soon, it's clear Ivy is completely amoral, perhaps even psychotic, and that her goal is not merely to be the daughter the mother never had, but to become the mother, right down to her clothes, her car and her husband.
Ivy, as it turns out, is just as much a loner as Cooper, and once they meet they instantly become best friends.

Though on one level "Poison Ivy" is little more than salacious exploitation, on another it's almost a campy spoof of soap operas in general.
Yet, at the same time the film is so earnest, so deadly serious and so filled to the brim with artsy touches by co-screenwriter/direc-tor Katt Shea, that any humor — intentional or unintentional — is soon drowned out by the overall heavy-handedness.
In the film's early scenes, Sylvie observes Ivy from afar, then meets her when they both get into trouble at school.
