The Michigan Central Railroad was chartered in 1846 to build a line to a point near the Indiana boundary and Lake Michigan.
By 1880 the township's population was 1198, an increase of 376 people (46%) over the previous twenty years.

NILES - It's a possibility in the future that residents in the Barron Lake and surrounding area of Howard Township will have an ambulance reach their house a lot quicker in the case of an emergency.
Announced Tuesday night during a meeting of the Howard Township Board, Clerk Shirley Tuttle said that Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service (SMCAS) is looking into staffing an ambulance in the township, and that it is likely the City of Buchanan will be doing this also.

Chief Leopold Pokagon and his tribe of Potawatomi Indians built a log church here in 1838 and deeded the forty acres of land on which it stood to the Catholic Bishop of Detroit.
Pokagon, who came to Silver Creek Township from his village outside of nearby Niles, was buried on this site in 1841.
The white frame church built in 1861 burned in 1886 and was immediately replaced by the present structure.
