Polabian Slavs is a collective term applied to a number of Slavic tribes living along the Elbe, between the Baltic Sea to the north, Solau to the west and Sudetes to the south.
However, both Lusatian languages are spoken by approximately 100,000 inhabitants of the region and the languages are regarded by the government of Germany as official languages of the region.

The Franks referred to most Slavs living between the Odra and Laba as either Wends or Sorbs, while in Slavic literature these people are called Polabian Slavs.
The term Wends was used in connection to all Slavs inhabiting west of Poland and north of Bohemia - Polabians, Pomeranians and Sorbs.
German and English name for Sorbs, a Slavic people who moved into Central Europe during the great migration, most likely in response to pressure by the westward movement of warlike peoples such as the Huns and Avars.

Similarly in the case of the Polabian Slavs, it was in direct correlation with internal unification trends and served more complex social and political needs.
PRIESTHOOD Another important difference between the Polabians and the other Slavs was the existence of a clearly defined priesthood associated with the cult of Svarozhits, Sventovit and Yarovit at Wolgast, as well as at Wolin, Szczecin and Gützkow.
In this context the emerging Polabian priesthood that faced a challenge from Christianity, must have tried to match the glamour, prestige and influence of their ideological adversary among their own people.

The tribe of proper Polabians, for which the name seems to be proposed rather than historical, would have occupied the borderlands of todays Mecklemburg and Holstein, dwelling roughly in the area east of Hamburg, reaching as far east as the north-south line from Travemunde.
Polabians do not appear in the earliest sources though and the tribe becomes a separate political entity only during the 11th century.
Then there is a period that no information has been documented on the Polabian Slavs in German chronicles.

Germanisation of the land between the Elbe-Saale and the Oder rivers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The scale of Germanic colonisation of Polabian lands presents a real difficulty.Any estimation of population movements in Middle Ages is highly speculative. This leaves a large margin for interpretation of scarce data.Estimations, of that type, are also quite often affected by the factors of political and nationalistic character, whether conscious or not.
The former Polabian lands, with the exception of the Baltic coast and its towns, which suffered as badly as the rest of western Germany, were affected much less.
So, the strong presence of Polabian Slavs in various sources as well as their survival as a distinct linguistic group is cumulatively convincing that germanization of the region was not a result of mass colonization, but rather large scale loss of the ethnic identity.

More broadly the Kashubs are part of a Slavic group that lives further west than the Poles, but which speak a similar language from the Lekhitic sub-group of Slavic languages.
Collectively these people have been called Wends (particularly in histories of the early middle ages), although the subgroups are the (still existent) Sorbs of Germany, the Kashubs of Poland, their close relatives the until recently identifiable Slovincians of Germany, assimilated Pomeranians of Germany, and the linguistically extinct Polabians from a bit further west in Germany.
I've been fascinated by the linguistic aspects of ethnography since my older brother brought home a college geography text when I was nine.
