Therefore, in everyday life, although there is polarised light, we don't normally notice, because our eyes are not equipped to detect preferences in the osciallation properties of light waves.
Although the fundamental properties of polarised light waves of different wavelengths are the same, technically their detection and measurement requires different instrumental setups.
We can use the characteristics of the polarised light reaching us to deduce the properties of the charged particles (such as cosmic-rays) emitting it and of the magnetic fields inducing its emission.

Polarised Sunglasses By Fuglies - Sunglasses for motorcycles, fishing or sailing
Even though only the horizontally vibrating (or polarised) light will be 100% blocked by the vertical polarising filter in the sunglasses, as the vibration direction moves further away from the vertical, the amount of blocking by the polarising filter will also increase towards 100%.
Polarising sunglasses also reduce the glare that comes off a other flat surfaces such as the hood of a car or the surface of a road making driving or riding safer and more pleasureable.
Polarising sunglasses block the reflections and hence objects below the water - like fish - become visible to the wearers of polarised sunglasses since virtually all of the reflections from the water surface are vibrating horizontally and are blocked by the vertically aligned polarising filters in the sunglasses.

 plane polarised light
This page gives a simple explanation of what plane polarised light is and the way it is affected by optically active compounds.
What emerges from the slit could be described as "plane polarised string", because the vibrations are only in a single (vertical) plane.
if you shine a beam of polarised monochromatic light (light of only a single frequency - in other words a single colour) through a solution of an optically active substance, when the light emerges, its plane of polarisation is found to have rotated.

 Polarised Light
Waves at intermediate angles will get through, but the component of their motion which is perpendicular to the slit will be absorbed and the wave that emerges the other side will be of a reduced size, and polarised in line with the slit.
In standard polaroid, of the sort found in polarising sunglasses, the filtering effect is the result of long polymers in the material, all aligned the same way.
Light reflecting off water (or any other shiny but non-metallic surface) will be partially polarised; this is because the component of the light which is perpendicular to the surface is inverted by being reflected, and interferes with itself destructively.

Rapid pulses of polarised light could be used to detect feisty or flailing raw plant materials.
Researchers in the US have uncovered a picture of plant health, from spinach to corn, that is invisible to the naked eye.
Polarised light that enters a leaf's interior can lose its polarity and be re-emitted as "depolarised" light.

Polarisation : Polarised and unpolarised waves
When all the oscillations occur in one plane, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, the wave is said to be polarised.
The difference between polarised and unpolarised waves is shown in Figure 3.
You should note that longitudinal waves cannot be polarised since the oscillations occur in the direction in which the wave is travelling.

Polarised moonlight aids dung beetle escape - 02 July 2003 - New Scientist
Researchers have found the first animal that uses the polarised pattern of moonlight to set its course by - it is a dung beetle.
When the researchers shaded the beetles with a polarising filter that changed the direction of polarisation by 90°, the beetles turned a right angle.
She says the great advantage of using polarised light, rather than the Moon itself, is that a couple of patches of cloudless sky shed enough light for navigation.

Louis Pasteur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon examination of the minuscule crystals of tartaric acid, Pasteur noticed, the crystals came in two asymmetric forms that were mirror images of one another.
Tediously sorting the crystals by hand gave two forms of tartaric acid: solutions of one form rotated polarised light clockwise, while the other form rotated light counterclockwise.
An equal mix of the two had no polarizing effect on light.

One way to reduce reflections is to place a polarising filter on the flash and another over the lens, with the polarising effect at right angles to the first.
Results: The positive and negative predictive values were better with the polarised images (0.97 and 0.84) than with the non-polarised images (0.92 and 0.81).
Conclusion: Images produced with polarising filters were more accurately and reproducibly assessed for demineralised white lesions surrounding orthodontic brackets, than images produced without polarising filters.

Part I discusses how the novice can obtain and use polarising filters with the compound microscope (not the stereo) and is illustrated with images of crystals viewed using polarised light.
To use polarising filters, place one filter, the polariser in the swing out filter holder beneath the microscope condenser and the second smaller filter, the analyser on the eyepiece (see below).
The author prefers to lightly stick the filter on the eyepiece with plasticine, 'Blu-Tak' or similar thus allowing this filter to be rotated in use by turning the eyepiece.

Austria polarised as the extreme right wing Freedom Party of Haider enters the government.
Railworkers took the initiative in launching demonstrations against the entry of the extreme right wing Freedom Party of Haider in the new government on the third of February.
First of all, the huge anti-racist demonstrations of young radicalised students and workers (not many people know that the first demonstrations against Haider's party entering the government were organised by the railworkers union), and secondly the opposition of the unions against privatisation will provide fertile ground for the spread of Marxist ideas.

I hope the attractive images of crystals under polarised light in the last article encouraged those unfamiliar with the technique to try it.

A number of the early Victorian microscope slides of crystals for polarised light use chemicals that are now hard for the amateur to obtain, and in many cases use toxic or harmful chemicals such as thallium, barium, mercury and lead salts.

What is Polarised Light   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
If this polarised light is passed through a polaroid filter only light vibrating in one plane is transmitted.

ONE year before the next presidential election in the United States, voters are evenly divided between the president, George Bush, and a Democratic challenger, a new poll showed yesterday.
The poll also was released in advance of governorship elections in Kentucky and Mississippi tomorrow, the results of which could provide an early indication of Republican chances and the strength of the president’s coattails before next year’s general elections.
Despite raising more than $80 million (£47 million) for his 2004 re-election bid he said the purpose of this tour was to campaign for the Republican candidates for governor in both states.
