In crystallography (q.v.) the " pole " of a face is the intersection of a line perpendicular to the face with the sphere of projection.
The " magnetic poles " of the earth are the points on the earth's surface where the dipping needle is vertical (see Terrestrial Magnetism); and the " poles " of a magnet are the points of the magnet where the magnetic intensity is greatest.

Pole vault - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pole vaulting is an athletics event where competitors use a long, flexible pole as an aid to leap over a bar, similar to the high jump, but at much greater heights.
Pole jumping competitions were known to the ancient Greeks, as well as the Cretans and Celts, but with these exceptions there is no record of its ancient practice as a sport.
Initially, vaulting poles were made from stiff materials such as bamboo or aluminium, until the introduction of flexible vaulting poles made from composites such as fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Rod (unit) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rod is a unit of length, equal to 11 cubits, 5.0292 metres or 16.5 feet.
The length is equal to the standardized length of the ox goad used by medieval English ploughmen; fields were measured in acres which were one chain (four rods) by one furlong (in the United Kingdom, ten chains).
Because the furlong was "One Plough's Furrow Long" and a furrow was the length a plough team was to be driven without resting, the length of the furlong and the acre vary regionally, nominally due to differing soil types.

Canoe Poles - Pole & Paddle Canoe
Who knows who used the first pole to propel a canoe through shallow water but it's a pretty good bet that it was just a tree cut from the shore or maybe picked up from a driftwood pile or a beaver cutting.
When the job is done the shoe is removed and the pole discarded or leaned in an obvious spot on the bank to be used by the next party through.
The other complication, though not a bad one, is that after using a pole for a few days or weeks you kind of form a bond with it and end up taking it home, so you might as well have carried one with you anyway, and saved the initial search.

Apparatus for composite pole repair - Patent 4918883
The method involves excavating around the pole, cleaning the surface of the pole, pumping a fumigant into the pole, applying a bonding agent to the clean surface, and then applying strips of a composite fiberglass mat and resin to the pole in a controlled manner until a desired casement thickness has been achieved.
In order to make this repair, the existing pole must be cut in two, the upper part of the pole supported, and lower part of the pole pulled from the ground prior to the installation of the concrete base, which is driven into the ground.
The method involves raising the pole vertically until its lower end is clear of the ground so that a replacement for the lower end can be attached, afterwards the pole and the replacement are joined together, after which the pole and stub are lowered vertically into the ground to the required depth.

The most important dimension on a pole is its diameter at the point of crossing - assuming, of course, that it is long enough to reach that point with a little something left to poke out into the sky.

In practice, my left arm is holding on to the pole - but due to lack of strength in guiding the pole - the left arm is pulling the pole to my left side where it lacks the strength to prevent the pole from hitting me in the chest.
Often times when vaulters "try to bend the pole" it is done at the expense of a good swing which creates momentum at the end of the vault.

The pole is then incised, or perforated, to proper depth in the groundline area for additional penetration and retention of preservative in this area susceptible to decay.
The lengths generally range from 60 to 125 feet, and are usually class 1,2,3 or H series poles (see technical data).
ANSI specifications indicate setting depth is 10% of the pole length plus two feet, a point commonly known as the "groundline." A properly set cedar pole will have at least one foot of the incised groundline area above and two feet below the surface of the soil.

Answer: Hi Marc, It seems like the best pole length for square running with a genoa is about.8-.85* the LP of the sail.
If you intend to use the pole for a gennaker at times, you should opt for a shorter pole length to make it a little easier to handle.
A pole as short as 100% of the J-dimension will be okay with the gennaker.
