The idea of the National Liberty Pole and Flag Raising Ceremony at Navesink came from William Osborne McDowell (1845 - 1927), a businessman of Newark, New Jersey and the founder of the Sons of the American Revolution.
His project was to erect a gigantic flag pole of unusual height on the Navesink Highlands on the New Jersey coast near Sandy Hook Point.
This is the highest point of land upon the Atlantic Coast in the continental United States and the location of the Navesink Light Station.
