Pole of Cold - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Poles of Cold are the places in the Northern and Southern hemispheres where the lowest air temperature was recorded.
In conclusion, it is still arguable where exactly the Northern Pole of Cold is. However, it is certainly known to be in northeastern Siberia.
In the Southern hemisphere, the Pole of Cold is in Antarctica near the Russian (Soviet) antarctic station Vostok, at 78°28′ S 106°48′ E.

CLIMATE AND - Online Information article about CLIMATE AND   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Siberian cold pole becomes a maximum of temperature during the summer, but the Greenland and polar minima remain throughout the year.
It is likely that near the South Pole will prove to be the coldest point on the earth's surface for the year, as the distribution of insolation would imply, and as the conditions of land and ice and snow there would suggest.
This probably results from the fact that the cold is the result of local radiation, and a wind interferes with these conditions by importing higher temperatures, or by mixing upper and lower strata.

The magnetic pole is currently 966 kilometers (600 miles) from the geographic one.
Because the magnetic pole lies in the Arctic Ocean, scientists attempting to pinpoint its precise location must visit during a brief window in the spring.

 MSN Encarta - Arctic
Winter in the Arctic is long and cold, and summer is short and cool.
For instance, on the Greenland ice cap average midwinter temperatures are -33° C (-27° F), whereas adjacent coastal settlements, whose climates are moderated by the relatively warm ocean, typically have a mean temperature of -7° C (19° F) in the same period.
The North Pole is not the coldest spot in the Arctic, because its climate is moderated by the ocean.

The Coldest Town: Life in Siberia's Pole of Cold - Bryan Alexander
If you work on the theory that the farther north you go from the equator the colder it gets, you would expect the North Pole to be the coldest place, but Verkhoyansk, which lies some 150 miles south, gets much colder.
It is the top of a 12,000-foot-high ice dome near the Russian Antarctic station of Vostok, some six hundred miles north of the South Pole, where a temperature of --127*F was recorded, the lowest on earth.
The reason Verkhoyansk gets so much colder than the North Pole is that it lies in the middle of a very large landmass, which cools much more efficiently than does the Arctic Ocean.

 NorthPole
Characterized by cold temperatures, as low as -45°C, high winds which often produce low visibility and very high wind-chill, and the major obstacles created by the shifting sea ice - pressure ridges, open water and counter drift - the challenge is one which continues to test even the most seasoned explorers.
The successful McVitie's Penguin Polar Relay (1997), organized by The Polar Travel Co, demonstrated that with effective selection, physical training, polar instruction, and a strategic re-supply schedule, people from all walks of life, without prior polar experience, may be able to meet such a challenge.
With the Pole almost in sight, the last 100 kilometers may prove the longest if the frozen, but ever mobile, surface sea ice develops a counter drift (southwards).

The previous high, set a quarter-century ago, was 49 F. Also, temperatures at the U.S. Amundsen-Scott Station at the South Pole have rarely ever topped 0 F, but in the first week of January they hit 5 F above zero.
