  myArmoury.com: The Medieval Poleaxe
Most of these poleaxes, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, had a spike on the top which allowed them to be potent thrusting weapons as well as being able to attack in both directions (axe or hammer on one side and a hammer or spike on the other).
The axe head on a poleaxe, when present, was generally smaller than that of its predecessor, the Danish axe, with a blade length around 7 inches, though it could be as wide as 11 inches or as narrow as 6 inches.
The shape of the hammer head of a poleaxe varied, with the earlier versions having the corners of the hammer head protrude slightly from the plane of the head.

 Introduction to the Poleaxe
The poleaxe can be found in several configurations and called by different names, including battle-axe, pole-hammer, war-hammer, or simply axe.
Sometimes a poleaxe was equipped with a second rondel near the bottom, a good example being a weapon in the National Bavarian Museum which has survived with its original haft.
This is considerably shorter than the 7-8 feet typical of halberds, glaives, bills, and other staff weapons of war, mostly because the poleaxe is primarily intended for single combat.

As a response to plate armour, the poleaxe seems to have grown out of two other weapons: the aforementioned two-handed axe and the warhammer, and its head developed along two distinct forms.
Regardless of hammer or axe head, the weapon was known as a poleaxe, and the masters at arms taught a single method for its use.

New Rubber Talhoffer Poleaxe Head - Sword Forum International
Poleaxes are simply too dangerous in wood, although leather and rubber can be used effectively, as can the "composite" method used so effectively by Schola Solis and the SCA.
I have a wooden poleaxe that I made based on talhoffer and it is too dangerous to do true bouting with, it is fine for techniques or half to three quarter speed work, but there is no allowance for misjudgment on your control.
The objective is to make the poleaxe work a bit more accessible, since there are currently a lot of barriers (and I like it a GREAT DEAL--but maybe not so much as Italian longsword).

The halberd is a poleaxe, meaning an axe on a pole.
In addition to the axe, halberds also have both a spear tip, and spike or hook on the rear for penetrating armor or hooking.
Nethack calls the bardiche a "long poleaxe" and that is exactly right, if you assume that the "long" applies to "axe" and not "pole".

myArmoury.com: Armour Research Society Workshop 2006
One of the defining points in working the poleaxe against armour is that most striking is done by thrusts with the points on the axe.
It was taught that nearly any swing with a poleaxe is meant not to stop part-way, but to follow through completely to the ground.
So, unless one wishes to use the haft of the weapon as a lever or tool for wrestling or throws, it is more effective to remain fast with the weapon and use it more in the fashion of a short spear.

Pollaxe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strictly speaking the flat back of the axe head is called a poll, the war poleaxes of the middle ages have spikes on the back, a poll not being adequate for penetrating armour.
There seems to be confusion as to the direct etymological root of poleaxe, both having merit possibly convergent terms.

While this kind of fighting--normally conducted a plaisance--is relatively safe in baton-based fighting systems, its use in rebated combats remains untested, owing largely to the potentially lethality of the weapons and the lack of cap a pied plate defenses for the combatants, as well as insufficient hand protection (3).
Based on four main manuscript sources and tempered by experience in the field with these exceedingly pleasing weapons, the intention of this course is to acquaint the studend with the basic stances, guards, movements, cuts and counters sufficient to build a starting point for more advanced work with the weapons.

Chinese Idiom: Why Use a Poleaxe to Kill a Chicken?
Once when Confucius went there he heard the strains of zithers and the sound of singing.
Deeming it extravagant to enact lavish ceremonies in such a small town, he said with a sardonic smile: “why use a poleaxe to kill a chicken?” Yan Yan defended himself, saying that he was doing what his teacher had encouraged him to do, and thereby would govern Wucheng better.
Later, the metaphor “killing a chicken with a poleaxe” began to be used to describe making a fuss over a trifling matter, or wasting one’s talent on a petty endeavor.
