Polecats Are On Their Way Back   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Records of true polecats came from 228 'new' 10-km squares (several of which were in Worcestershire), confirming continuation of the encouraging recovery after near-extinction at the beginning of this century.
Worcestershire is now completely repopulated by true polecats (a process which probably began in the far west of the county in the 1960s), although feral ferrets and hybrids will always occur from time to time as a result of ferrety escapes or releases.
True polecats are now re-established in the Midlands by natural spread at least as far east as a line through Macclesfield, Northampton and Oxford, and through re-introduction's to Argyll, Cumbria, the Chilterns and parts of Hampshire and Wiltshire in central southern England.

The polecat is thought to have become extinct in Scotland before 1920, with the last sighting being recorded in Sutherland in 1912.
It must be presumed that, in fact, the polecat became extinct in North Scotland around 1915, for otherwise the population should have expanded as did that in Wales, and as, indeed the Scottish population of Pine marten and Wild cat have done.
Polecat ferrets have gone wild and bred with polecats ever since man has kept ferrets, so it is a reasonable assumption that no wild polecat has escaped this admixture, and unreasonable to suppose that Welsh polecats have somehow managed to keep themselves in splendid isolation.

Northern Ohio Ferret Association - The Ferret, Polecat and Hybrids   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Domesticated ferrets are not as smart as polecats, both as a result of a decrease in cranial capacity (the brain is smaller), as well as structural changes within the brain itself [Darlington 1957; Davis and Dent 1968; Grandin 1998; Kruska 1996; Roehrs 1986].
Polecats evolved as same sex exclusionary territorialists [Lodé 1996], and many have regarded the allowance of other ferrets within a territory as an indication of a genetic change in their 'antisocial' behaviors.
Since the ferret was domesticated from a solitary carnivore-the polecat-in much the same way as the Egyptians domesticated the cat, and we know the ultimate reason was the same (mousing), it is a simple use of homologous analogy to infer original intent.
