Poleyn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.umd.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The poleyn was a component of Medieval and Renaissance armor that protected the knee.
During the fifteenth century poleyns developed an articulated construction that attached to the cuisses and schynbalds or greaves.
A characteristic of late fifteenth century gothic armor was a projection that guarded the side of the knee.

These poleyns appear to have extended around the knee and to have provided a flared lower edge to ease the transition to the shynbald or chausses for the calf.
By 1375 this plate was made in a single piece and articulated with the poleyn through the use of two or three lames (only one lame is used to articulate the cuisse to the poleyn; two lames are sometimes used for the demi-greave attachment).
As the century progresses the poleyn is reduced in size and the wing flared in the beginnings of the very broad flair seen on 15th century leg harnesses.

The articulation at the knee is formed by the central pivot of the poleyn onto which are directly articulated lames above and below.
Earlier armour often exhibited two lames either side of the poleyn, as was the case in Project 1.
The heavy dishing of the centre of the poleyn is next carried out using the large ball-ended hammer into the deepest depression carved into the stump.

Poleyn: The period name for what is known in modern SCA verbiage as the "knee cop," the defense of the knee.
During the early 14th century, rondels were laced to the mail to improve the defense of the leg and add to the defense offered by a mail chausse.
By 1350 the poleyn was articulated with lames; a heart-shaped wing was then extended from the poleyn itself to provide more protection for the back of the knee.

During the 16th.C the number of lames forming the shell articulation at the knee was reduced to two - one above and one below the poleyn.
I always start this section with the poleyn as, if any adjustments are necessary, it is much easier to adapt the lames to the poleyn rather than the other way round.
On to the next stage - the defense for the lower leg or greave.

And upon this the whole township of Brightwaltham sworn along with the whole township of Conholt say upon their oath that Hugh Poleyn has better right to hold the said tenement than anyone else has, and that he is the next heir by right of blood.

The thigh was covered by a large single plate, the cuisse itself, which was attached with articulation to the poleyn, or knee guard, which was usually matched in form to the couter, with the same sort of fan styling.
Demigreaves are the smaller plate articulated to the base of the poleyn, and complete the most basic leg armour.
Full greaves could be worn, strapped to the shins, by themselves or with the rest of the cuisses.

Finally, a middle strap is wrapped behind the knee and buckeld somewhat loosely so as not to hinder movement when the leg is flexed straight.
Some period documents suggest that a strip of blanket should be placed around the knees under the poleyn to prevent chaffing by the armor while walking and running.

Cavalry used to wear pieces called greaves to protect their shins and cuisses to protect the thighs in the centuries before.
The cuisses would connect to the poleyn with leather straps and then the greaves were attached in the same manner to the poleyn.
With the use of muskets and the decline in use of armor, tassets were lengthened to the just past the knee to make up for the loss of the cuisses, while greaves were replaced by high boots.

A long time ago my family started looking into the origin of the name Polaine and found Poulain de Liege from Belgium.
There are many spellings of the name, but a common Medieval ones are Poleyn (a part of a suit of armour), Poulain (French chocolate) and Poulaine (a type of very pointy shoe).
But most amusing were these two entries in House of Names (which seem totally spurious), in which the describe origins of our name thus:
