Police box - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A police box is a telephone kiosk or callbox for use by members of the police.
Police boxes pre-date the era of modern telecommunications; today, every police officer (in technologically developed countries) is likely to carry a two-way radio.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station allowing officers "on the beat" to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual, requesting help if necessary or even to detain prisoners until a vehicle could be sent to transport them to the station or to jail.

TARDIS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Externally, the Doctor's TARDIS resembles the shape of a 1950s British police box (a special phone booth for police communications), and the programme has become so much a part of British popular culture that the shape of the police box is now more immediately associated with the TARDIS than its original real-world function.
The concept of the police box disguise came from BBC staff writer Anthony Coburn, who rewrote the programme's first episode from a draft by C.
This was challenged by the Metropolitan Police who felt that they owned the rights to the police box image.

The original police boxes served as a communications point between police stations and constables on the beat, and could also be used by members of the public to summon emergency assistance.
The first police boxes in Britain were introduced from America in 1888, although the earliest of the type on which the TARDIS from the television programme Doctor Who is based was installed in Newcastle in the 1920's.
However, the court ruled that as the police box is nowadays associated by the public more with Dr Who than with the police force, the rights to the design should be with the BBC.

The time travelling vessel became the subject of a legal wrangle as the Metropolitan Police fought to gain control of the blue box, which was a familiar sight on the streets of London up until the 1960s.
It said in 1953 there were 685 blue police telephone boxes in London, and that the boxes had a considerable reputation among the general public.
Mr Knight said that the police telephone box had been used by other police forces outside London, so was not exclusive to the Metropolitan Police, and at best it would be described by the public as "street furniture".

Along the way, the Police released songs about generational differences ("Born in the '50s"), Irish politics ("Invisible Sun") and the ultimate ode to manipulation and their only number one hit ("Every Breath You Take").
