Poliomyelitis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The poliovirus is a small RNA (ribonucleic acid) virus that has three different strains and is extremely infectious.
After the person is exposed to the poliovirus, the virus is expelled through faeces for several weeks and it is during this time that a polio outbreak can occur in a community.
Once the poliovirus invades the intestines, it is absorbed by the capillaries in the walls of the intestine and is then carried by the bloodstream throughout the body.

 Synthetic Life
The synthetic poliovirus cDNA was transcribed by RNA polymerase into viral RNA, which translated and replicated in a cell-free extract, resulting in the de novo synthesis of infectious poliovirus.
Poliovirus, an enterovirus of the Picornaviridae, is a small, nonenveloped, icosahedral virus consisting of five different macromolecules: 60 copies each of capsid polypeptides VP1, -2, -3, and -4 and one copy of the positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome (~7.5 kilobases in length) (Fig.
The presence or absence of genetic markers in the inoculated virus and the virus isolated from the spinal cords of paralyzed mice was confirmed by amplification of the viral RNA by RT-PCR and restriction enzyme analysis.

 POLIOVIRUS VACCINE LIVE ORAL TRIVALENT
To accomplish this with live poliovirus vaccine, it is necessary for the virus to multiply in the intestinal tract.
The immune response to Poliovirus Vaccine Live Oral Trivalent is similar to that induced by natural infection with poliovirus and includes the development of secretory antibody within the intestinal tract.
Poliovirus Vaccine Live Oral Trivalent can be administered simultaneously with DPT, MMR or Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccines without increased side effects; the immune response to each antigen is adequate and comparable to that found in patients receiving these vaccines according to the routine schedule.

Poliovirus is the prototype of a very large family of human pathogens, the Picornaviridae.
Although HCV and poliovirus are very different viruses in many aspects of their molecular biology, surprisingly, many of their basic mechanisms of replication are related.
Chemical and molecular studies have shown that poliovirus is a remarkably simple biological entity: an aggregate consisting of only five different species of macromolecules (four proteins and one single-stranded RNA) that form an icosahedral particle of altogether 241 macromolecules.

Will The Poliovirus Eradication Program Rid the World of Childhood Paralysis?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The mystery deepens when we examine World Health Organization (WHO) statistics on AFP and poliovirus infection in the Dominican Republic for the last several years.Although the number of cases of AFP in the Dominican Republic from 1996 to 1999 range from 4 to 24, not a single case of poliovirus was detected.
Like poliovirus researchers before them, it is clear that Dulbecco and Vogt were propagating disease-associated substances in their tissue cultures, and that they later transferred these substances to monkeys in whom acute flaccid paralysis developed.
One hundred of those were classified as poliovirus-related, leaving 209 cases"two-thirds of the total"probably due to a cause other than poliovirus (with the caveat that epidemiological statistics are not perfectly accurate in every country of the world).

For the first time, scientists have used the genetic map of the poliovirus to construct a man-made version of the crippling virus -- in a move they say illustrates the potential for humans to manufacture viruses for use as bio-weapons.
Many researchers have believed poliovirus could be "recreated" using the published data on the virus' genome, but no one had done the work.
The poliovirus project required nearly three years of work at a highly sophisticated research laboratory using the most advanced DNA synthesis technology available at State University of New York of Stony Brook.

Importation of Wild Poliovirus into Qinghai Province - China, 1999
The isolates were later differentiated as wild poliovirus type 1 at the National Poliovirus Laboratory in Beijing.
The Qinghai poliovirus strain is closely related (98%) to poliovirus isolates from central and northern India during 1998-1999, but unrelated to polioviruses that circulated in China until 1994.
Preliminary data from this investigation suggest that the polio case in Qinghai was caused by importation of wild poliovirus with limited circulation.

 || DukeMedNews || Researchers Use Crippled Poliovirus to Attack Brain Cancer
In the study, the modified poliovirus rapidly killed cancer cells derived from primary brain tumors as well as cells derived from breast and colon cancer metastases -- all within a matter of four to six hours.
In fact, polio is known to be one of the quickest killers of infected host cells, producing approximately a thousand additional infectious viral units per infected cell, he said.
But giving the modified poliovirus to humans -- even to terminal brain cancer patients -- requires rigorous testing to understand the mechanism behind its virulence in cancer cells and its impotence in normal brain cells.
