The '''Polish September Campaign''' or '''Defensive War of 1939''' (Polish: Wojna obronna 1939 roku) was the conquest of Poland by the armies of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and a small contingent of Slovak forces during the Second World War.
The Polish Army was fairly strong in numbers (~1 million soldiers), but much of it was not mobilised by the 1st September, as the Polish government, advised in this by the British and French governments, constantly hoped that the war could be resolved (at least for the time being) through diplomatic channels.
Polish forces abandoned regions of Pomerania, Wielkopolska and Silesia in the first week of the campaign, after a series of battles known as the battle of the border.
