The 1st Grenadier Division in Alsace formed part of the French 20th Corps and while the French army crumbled with troops simply walking away from the fight, the Poles fought dozens of rear-guard battles in the Moselle area around Diesen on the German border and Lagarde and Raon-L’Etape to the east of Nancy.
By July 1940 remnants of the Polish Army were being assembled and reorganized in the Glasgow area as the 1st Polish Army Corps under the command of General Marian Kukiel.
The Polish 1st Division’s role was to be in later stages of the invasion to support the build up sufficient strength in the bridgehead behind the beaches to allow the breakout and push for the strategic city of Caen.

Polska Organizacja Wojskowa (POW, Polish for Polish Military Organisation) was a secret military union created by Józef Piłsudski in November of 1914, during the WW I. The PMO was founded in November of 1914 as a merger of two previously-existing youth para-military organisations: the Druzyny Strzeleckie and the Zwiazek Strzelecki.
Finally, the PMO was the core of Polish defences of the city of Lwów in the Battle of Lwów against the attacking forces of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (roughly 400 members in the initial phase of the struggle).
In 1912 Rydz was one of the founders of the Polish paramilitary organisation Riflemen's Association (Zwiazek Strzelecki).

The problem ended in 1924 with the reorganisation of the cavalry arm, when the role of the mounted rifles was changed, and the regiments were organised as line cavalry and split into new units with the light horse and lancer regiments.
From the original 10 brigades and the mounted rifle regiments were organised 4 cavalry divisions (1st Bialystok, 2nd Warszawa, 3rd Poznan, 4th Lwów) of 3 brigades each, each brigade being of 2 regiments, and 5 independent cavalry brigades (four of 3 regiments, one of 4 regiments), 17 brigades in all.
The 2nd Cavalry Division in Warsaw remained in existence because the divisional commander, general B. Wieniawa-D³ugoszowski, was a favourite aide de camp of Pilsudski from the WWI years and was one of his favourite officers after the war.

The 6th traces its history to the 6th Infantry Division, which was formed in 1944 and fought as a component of the Polish 1st Army, alongside the Red Army, during the final stages of the war.
During the Warsaw Pact era, the division was intended to operate as a component of the Polish Front whose objective would be the capture of Denmark.
As a result, several of the division's support units (artillery, assault gun, and anti-aircraft battalions, which comprised the second, air-landing echelon of the division) and the 33rd Reserve Assault Battalion were either eliminated or significantly reduced.

At the same time at Butovo the Soviet 199th Guards Rifle Regiment were attacked by 3rd Battalion Panzer Grenadier Regiment in torrential rain and the high ground around Butovo was taken by 11th Panzer Division.
