Fiat 126 history - Gizmo Highway Auto Guide
The Fiat 126 was a small 2 cylinder rear engine car that was very popular in Europe but not as well loved as the famous Fiat 500 Nuevo that it replaced.
Fiat knew that people still loved the style of the aging 500 so the 126 and the 500 were sold along side each other until 1975.
In March 2004 Fiat released a concept car that mimics the Fiat 500 Nuevo styling in the same way the new VW Beetle is styled after the old.

In 1993 it was replaced by the front-engined Fiat Cinquecento.
Engine capacity gradually increased to the dizzy heights of 700cc in the 1980s (the maximum output at that time was 34 bhp), culminating in the introduction of the 126bis, which was water-cooled.

Fiat's 76 year presence in Poland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
After world war II and the subsequent 'cold war', relations were resumed in the 1960's with two major licensing contracts: the Fiat 125P in 1965 and the 126P in 1971.
FSM (Fabrika Samochodów Malolitrazowych) was set up in Bielsko Biala to produce the 126P and was joined a few years later by the Tychy plant and the Skoczow foundry.
On this occasion the company took the name by which it is known today: Fiat Auto Poland S.A. The agreement between Fiat Auto and the Polish state is the most important privatisation agreement so far drawn up on Poland and one of the biggest ever made anywhere in eastern Europe.

Fiat 126 Eastern European history and development by FSM in Poland
FSM were already making the 125p under licence from Fiat, but waiting lists were long and the car was still too expensive.
Fiat announced the 126 at the Turin Motor Show in October 1972 and FSM unveiled the 126p just one month later in Warsaw.
As with the Fiat branded car the first significant change to specification was in 1977 when the engine was increased in capacity to 652cc, the brakes were increased to 185mm diameter, the dynamo was replaced by an alternator and the car gained plastic bumpers.

 Beskid
In the early eighties, after some years of producing the FIAT 126p (the Polish version of the 126) under license, the Polish small car maker FSM (Fabryka Samochodow Malolitrazowych, which translates to low-capacity car factory) decided to investigate the possibility of replacing the out-dated little automobile with a more modern one.
Most of the prototypes differred in the capacities (which ranged from 594 cc to 1116 cc) of their engines, most of which were based on the water-cooled 2-cylinder 4-stroke one powering the FIAT 126p.
Under the skin, the prototype utilized many components from the FIAT 126p (such as the already mentioned power units and the tiny wheels) to minimize the cost of an eventual phasing into production.
