The dance developed from the Polish dance (taniec polski) of the 18th century; this form, in turn, was derived from the chodzony (walking dance) which was popular in the 17th century and known as a pieszy (pedestrian), or chmielowy (hops) dance.
According to the entry on the polonaise in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, before the end of the 16th century the Polish folk dances that are ancestors of the polonaise were adopted by the lower ranks of the upper classes (gentry and lesser aristocracy).
MUSIC Podhale is the only area of Poland where the folk culture is still alive as it is present in the daily activities of the górale.

These aesthetics are represented in Polish music mainly by Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) and Krzysztof Penderecki (born 1933) as well as Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki (born 1933) and additionally by Kazimierz Serocki (1922-1981), Tadeusz Baird (1928-1981), Wojciech Kilar (born 1932), Witold Szalonek (born 1927), Boguslaw Schaeffer (born 1929), and Wlodzimierz Kotonski (born 1925).
The music of Zygmunt Krauze (born 1938) is usually classified as belonging to this minimalist style and the composer is regarded one of the forerunners of the style in Europe.

Seems Polish immigrants, mostly from the mountain villages of the southeast, spurned the major labels' offerings of modern imported urban music from the old country and filled the gap with their own defiantly roots records (I'm cribbing shamelessly from Dick Spottswood's informative liner notes).
