Politeia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon a meaning of politeia is "the conditions and rights of the citizen, or citizenship", analogous to the Latin civitas.
Politeia is the original title of the book now in English known as The Republic.
Along with monarchy and aristocracy politeia is one of the three virtuous forms of government.

When speaking of politeia, the classics thought of the way of life of a community as essentially determined by its "form of government." We shall translate politeia by "regime," taking regime in the broad sense in which we sometimes take it when speaking, e.g., of the Ancien Regime of France.
Politeia is ordinarily translated by "constitution." But when using the term "constitution" in political context, modern men almost inevitably mean a legal phenomenon, something like the fundamental law of the land, and not something like the constitution of the body or of the soul.
The laws regarding a politeia may be deceptive, unintentionally and even intentionally, as to the true character of the politeia.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2003.07.03
It is arguable that Aristotle develops his concept of the politeia inductively, building on other forms of association, the family and mastery, the telos of the polis, the opinions of others, as well as the citizen.
The politeia is the "ordering of the inhabitants," and the reader wonders how Aristotle could discuss the "ordering" of something before detailed discussion of that which is being ordered.
Bates' strategy of translating "politeia" as "regime" is consistent with his observation that a translator should not try to remove ambiguity from a text by shifting translations as the context changes.

The Problem with Politeia as Polity
Yet there is a problem with using "constitution" in that politeia is not to be understood as a written constitution such as we understand the term today.
French translations usually render politeia as gouvernment, but this is also misleading to modern readers, in that changes in "governments" that occur after electoral defeats do not necessarily mean a change in the form of a political community.
Given that the first use of politeia as a specific regime type is in reference to the regime of Plato's Laws and also to the rule of the guardians in Plato's Republic, we should not be too quick to think such a regime is considered a choiceworthy one in Aristotle's eyes.

Students of legal history will be indebted to Costanzo for the superb five-part series in Politeia depicting the crucial influence of Christianity on the development of Western lego-political thought.
Despite the greater perduring value of Politeia, it is likely that the second volume of Costanzo's Political and Legal Studies, Studies in American Constitutional Law, will attract greater attention.
Indeed, one small gauge, I suggest, of the recovery in Catholic higher education may well be the speed with which this superb study is added to the required reading lists of graduate students in politics and law.
