  Politian
Politian was professor of Greek and Latin literature at Florence from 1480; among his pupils were the Englishmen, Grocyn and Linacre, and the German Reuchlin.
Politian was one of the first Italian Humanists who succeeded in rivalling the Greek scholarship of the native-born Hellenes.
As a Humanist, Politian is a Latin writer ef poetry and prose, a poet of Latin sentiment in Italian.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 02.04.05
Politian was looking at M itself, and not the exemplar from which Poggio had M copied, when he was entering into his copy of the editio princeps the readings of what he believed to be the source of all mss.
The one strong piece of evidence to the contrary, Politian's statement that line 1.4.86a was absent from his manuscript, is rightly explained as an error in collation caused by identical line endings.
Die-hard skeptics who maintain that Politian was collating an apograph of M and not M itself will have to explain why, if Politian was collating an apograph of M, the discrepancies he recorded in the editio princeps are so few and so trivial.

 Chapter 7 - A Learned Squabble
Politian, having been a rejected pretender to the love and the hand of Scala's daughter, kept a very sharp and learned tooth in readiness against the too prosperous and presumptuous secretary, who had declined the greatest scholar of the age for a son-in-law.
Politian had used the freedom of a friend, and pleasantly, in the form of a Latin epigram, corrected the mistake of Scala in making the culex (an insect too well known on the banks of the Arno) of the inferior or feminine gender.
Politian had been generously willing to hold up a mirror, by which the too-inflated secretary, beholding his own likeness, might be induced to cease setting up his ignorant defences of bad Latin against ancient authorities whom the consent of centuries had placed beyond question,

Mabbott (I, 297) suggests that Poe seems here to recall something on page 84 of Ann Cook's Letters where she wrote, "I suggested that it would be better to plunge the dagger into his heart while folded in the arms of her for whom he deserted me." He further suggests (p.

The humanist scholar Politian, a protégé of Lorenzo de' Medici, was a leader in the use of the Tuscan dialect in poetry.
Politian provides a vivid description of the garden of Venus, where the little brothers of Cupid—those who concern themselves with the love affairs of ordinary people—sharpen their arrows on whetstones and cause even the fish to fall in love.
A possible inspiration for many mythological images is the poet's account of the marvelous house of the goddess, adorned with representations of the loves of the gods.

The Edgar Allan Poe Review - submission information
The queer resonance of the play is heightened still further by the fact that the historical Politian was probably gay (a Renaissance poet and scholar who never married, wrote poems about boys and was companion and housemate to Lorenzo de’Medici).
Another mystery is the “fearful riddle” that haunts Politian when he first appears in scene three, where he speaks of an “imp” that follows him everywhere and causes his melancholy.
Not only does this image haunt the margins of the play, Politian himself assumes the role of conscience in the final scene, where instead of killing Castiglione, he promises to publicly expose him (again recalling the confessional role played by exteriorized figures of conscience in the two tales mentioned earlier).

Yet, to say nothing of the gout, Messer Bartolommeo’s felicity was far from perfect: it was embittered by the contents of certain papers that lay before him, consisting chiefly of a correspondence between himself and Politian.
That critical supercilious Politian — a fellow-browser, who was far from amiable — must be made aware that the solid secretary showed, in his leisure hours, a pleasant fertility in verses, which indicated pretty clearly how much he might do in that way if he were not a man of affairs.
And Tito, who had just been looking into the ‘Miscellanea,’ found so much to say that was agreeable to the secretary — he would have done so from the mere disposition to please, without further motive — that he showed himself quite worthy to be made a judge in the notable correspondence concerning the culex.

At one and the same time learned and popular, formally sophisticated in the hands of artists and poets like Donatello and Politian, it is also immediately apprehensible in its charm and adaptability, accessible to all.
It is, as Eugenio Garin once wrote of Politian's description of a rose, umanissima—precisely because of its union of these two terms, traditional and new, aristocratic and popular, learned and familiar, classic and vernacular.
A special case of the spiritello is that of the putto who plays the bogey man, concealing his true identity behind a ferocious Silenus-mask or hiding beneath Mars's armor in order to frighten some equally childish companion.
