Social Democratic parties are among the largest parties in most countries in Europe.
Although social democrats had been influential in this period, and a moderate breed of Euro-Communism[?] had developed, in general Nationalist, Fundamentalist and Capitalist forces were seen as allies of the United States, and there was some suspicion of Social Democrats as potentially "soft on Communism" and seeking to implement something like Stalinism in Western Europe.
It is an interesting phenomenon that Social Democrats often succeed in their aims to the point of political irrelevance - then spending some time out of favor with voters who turn to more Conservative parties, e.g.

As of 2004, social democrats generally do not see a conflict between a capitalist market economy and their definition of a socialist society, and support reforming capitalism in an attempt to make it more equitable through the creation and maintenance of a welfare state.
Social democrats are often described, particularly by revolutionary socialists as being reformists that is in favour of change through gradual reforms in the capitalist system.
This is in sharp contrast to social democratic ideas, such as workers' unions and employers' unions debating over the wages of the workers to better the working people's living conditions, while control of the means of production would remain in the hands of capitalists.

Plato's Political Philosophy [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
In 399 when a democratic court voted by a large majority of its five hundred and one jurors for Socrates’ execution on an unjust charge of impiety, Plato came to the conclusion that all existing governments were bad and almost beyond redemption.
In his political philosophy, the clarification of concepts is thus a preliminary step in evaluating beliefs, and right beliefs in turn lead to an answer to the question of the best political order.
Plato’s achievement as a political philosopher may be seen in that he believed that there could be a body of knowledge whose attainment would make it possible to heal political problems, such as factionalism and the corruption of morals, which can bring a city to a decline.

Political exposures are as much a declaration of war against the government as economic exposures are a declaration of war against the factory owners.
Hence, political exposures in themselves serve as a powerful instrument for disintegrating the system we oppose, as a means for diverting from the enemy his casual or temporary allies, as a means for spreading hostility and distrust among the permanent partners of the autocracy.

lessons from the vietnam anti-war movement
Underlying the approach of the revolutionary wing of the anti-war movement, which began as a mostly student movement, was the Marxist view that the working class is the only class with the potential and actual power to transform society.

The student movement, having organized first, and being the most supportive of self-determination for the Vietnamese, generally played the role of the left-wing in the broad coalitions that formed to carry out city-wide, regional, or national demonstrations.

Social Security was representative of national planning schemes, some of which had been tested during World War I and regained popularity with intellectuals after the crash of 1929.
Social Security was so important to those--such as FDR--who scorned the individualist tradition because it was the centerpiece of a revolution that meant “big government, modern government” was here to stay.
When Social Security survived--and, in its earlier years, it was unknown whether it would, and it required all the political, judicial, and legislative skills FDR and his allies could summon--Americans implicitly accepted the most essential part of a new social policy.

Swans Commentary: There Never Were Any 'Good Old Days' In The Democratic Party, by Howie Hawkins - hhawk01
"A liberation movement for the Democratic Party" is one of the goals Ralph Nader stated for his campaign in the question and answer period of his February 23 press conference announcing his 2004 independent presidential candidacy.
Today, the Left in the corporate media is simply the Democrats; anybody to the left and independent of the Democrats is regarded by the corporate media as marginal, if not downright delusional, as their treatment of Nader illustrates.
Ralph Nader may be criticized for contributing to the myth that the Democrats might still somehow be transformed into a progressive party, but he is certainly right to scold the "liberal intelligentsia" for failing to fight for their beliefs inside or outside of the Democratic Party.
