		In the early 'fifties nativism was revivified by an unparalleled inflow of aliens.
		The times were propitious for the success of an aggressive third party; for the Whigs were broken by the death of Clay and Webster and the crushing defeat of 1852, and both the Whig and Democratic parties were disintegrating on the slavery issue.
		In entering national politics the party abandoned its mysteries, without making compensatory gains; when it was compelled to publish a platform of principles, factions arose in its ranks; moreover, to draw recruits the faster from Whigs and Democrats, it "straddled" the slavery question, and this, although a temporary success, ultimately meant ruin.

		Nativism's political relevance grew out of the increase of immigrants during the ‘20s and ‘30s and the anti-foreign writings that abounded during these decades.
		Clearly, early nineteenth-century nativism participated in significant political changes, and the goal of this paper is to summarize nativism between 1830 and 1845 while analyzing these major political developments.
		This petition appealed beyond local political agencies to the state legislature, and the New York state legislature found itself between the plea of the governor, calling for public funding of Catholic schools, and the discouragement of the Public School Society, warning of the precedent this act would set.

		By far the most massive and powerful political backlash against immigrants and Catholics before the Civil War, however, came with the Know Nothing movement of the mid-1850s.

		According to Morrison “the eclipse of interparty debate between the Democrats and Whigs over expansion defines the politics of the extension of slavery.”(1) The political source of the Civil War, he submits, was anchored in the meaning of national expansion.
