Structure and development of political parties — Virtual Finland
The first party political platform was approved in 1972, and has since been supplemented by the extension of the Party's Christian ideology to various sectors of social policy.
Finland was the first country in Europe to hold parliamentary elections in 1945 after the end of the Second World War.
The four parties (Social Democrats, the Agrarian Party/Centre Party, the Democratic Union of the Finnish People/the Left Alliance, the Coalition Party) that became the dominant political grouping in those elections, were still the largest parties in the most recent polling, though in a slightly different order.

Finland's political parties and groups compete for political influence in a free and open manner, without coercion or restrictions on political liberties.
Under the proportional representation system, the largest party in the legislature is seldom able to gain more than about 25% of the seats, and so a parliamentary majority generally depends upon the formation of party coalitions.

 Finland - POLITICAL DYNAMICS
Most of the country's political parties, so fractious and distinct until the 1960s, then drifted toward the political center; remaining disagreements among the principal parties focused less on what policies were to be than on how they were to be implemented.
According to the law, parties were to receive subsidies according to the number of delegates they had in the Eduskunta.
The large parties funneled a good part of their funds to their local and their ancillary organizations, while the small parties, with their existence at stake, used their resources on the national level.

GeographyIQ - World Atlas - Europe - Finland - Government and Political Conditions
Finland has a mixed presidential/parliamentary system with executive powers divided between the president, who has primary responsibility for national security and foreign affairs, and the prime minister, who has primary responsibility for all other areas.
Finland's 1995 accession to the European Union (EU) has blurred the line between foreign and domestic policy; the respective roles of the president and prime minister are evolving, and plans are under consideration to rewrite the constitution to clarify these and other issues.
Political activity by communists was legalized in 1944, and although four major parties have dominated the postwar political arena, none now has a majority position.
