But one cannot speak of a political party until that party has attained some degree of organization; and it was only during the struggles that preceded the Rebellion of 1837 that the Reform or Liberal party in Canada may be said to have taken shape.
The Liberal-Conservative party took the view that to wipe out the tariff barriers between Canada and the United States, and to encourage trade to flow north and south instead of east and west, would be to undo a large part of the result effected by Confederation, by the National Policy, and by the transcontinental railways.

The Liberal Party (LP), which held office from 1935 to 1957 and again (except for part of 1979) from 1968 to 1984, is nationwide in its representation but has its main strength in Québec.
The Liberal Party's majority in Parliament was reduced to 155 in elections called by Chrétien in June 1997.
In January 2000, members of the Reform Party voted to create a broader conservative grouping called the Canadian Alliance, uniting the western-based, populist Reform Party with the eastern-based Progressive Conservatives in an attempt to eventually unseat the dominant Liberals.

Canada's First Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald, was the historic founder of the Progressive Conservative Party, although it was not actually called by that name until 1942.
Of all the "fringe" parties their poll numbers remain highest, and some have speculated the party may eventually unseat the NDP as the new voice of the progressive left.
