Rap artists from different banlieues tend to spurn traditional politics, affirming their loyalty to their "families" from their cites, yet calling for a multi-ethnic alliance and political movement with hip hop at its core.
French rap's incendiary lyrics have met with mainstream criticism, most notably when Supr?me NTM's hit "Nique la Police"("F--k The Police," obviously inspired by the American group NWA's song of the same name) triggered a political and legal firestorm.
Rap for many French banlieusards represents "a turn to speak" ("la prise de parole") and an opportunity to express rejectionist attitudes and "la haine" (hatred) of the French establishment.

Gangsta rap and political rap from the late 80's/early 90's is good, too, especially NWA, Public Enemy, and Ice Cube.
Also, it's a lot more political than American rap - lots of it is anti-police, anti-racism, anti-government, etc. Just wish I had taken French so I could better understand what they were saying...
However, for the past 10 years or so, American rap has bored the fuck out of me. It's the same shit, about having money and being bad, over and over again.

Don't Front, Senator - The Harvard Political Review - End Paper
Lest politicians think rap feuds pre-dated political smear campaigns (or even blame such campaigns on rappers), it is worth looking at Richard Nixon's campaign against George McGovern in 1972.
Rap music and hip-hop culture seem foreign to most top politicians, other than perhaps Rev. Al Sharpton, who has referred to himself as the hip-hop candidate, and when politicians try to embrace hip-hop, they generally seem ridiculous.
Nixon's ads accused McGovern of dishonesty and flip-flopping, or in rap terms, "frontin'." Twenty years later, Vanilla Ice was a target of similar accusations, as everyone from "Suge" Knight, CEO of Death Row Records, to white rap trio 3rd Bass accused of Vanilla Ice of fabricating his "ghetto" background to appeal to a rap audience.

Chicano and Mexican rap emerges in the context of urban corruption and decay in Mexico and the repressions of the barrios in the U.S. southwest.
Rap music, with its characteristic use of various musical sources, lends easily to the adoption of hip hop by Chicanos and Mexicans because their lives have continuously been marked by the processes of mestizaje inherent in Chicano and Mexican culture.
Classifying Chicano music into critical and uncritical mestizaje, this categorization moves discussions of Chicano music away from Manichean arguments of “authentic” versus “assimilationist” and into questioning sexist lyrics, unoriginal music, and lack of political edge (210).
