Political status of Taiwan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The political solution that is accepted by most of the current groups is the status quo : that is, to leave Taiwan's status the way it is, as a de facto independent state, without making a formal declaration of independence.
The status quo is accepted in large part because it does not define the legal status or future status of Taiwan, leaving each group to interpret the situation in a way that is politically acceptable to its members.
At the same time, a policy of status quo has been criticized as being dangerous precisely because different sides have different interpretations of what the status quo is, leading to the possibility of war through brinksmanship or miscalculation.

Political correctness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Political correctness is a term used to criticize what is seen as misguided attempts to impose limits on language and the range of acceptable public debate.
They argue that the political criticism of diction may inhibit freedom of speech, particularly the expression of opinions that risk offending some group; comparisons are sometimes made to George Orwell 's newspeak.
Some on the political left reject the conservative definition of the term when applied as a blanket political epithet to all liberals and leftists, but do believe that there is indeed a political correctness which has become a problem on the left.

Political Philosophy [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Political rationalism emphasizes the employment of reason in social affairs: that is, individuals ought to submit to the logic and universality of reason rather than their own subjective or cultural preconceptions.
Nonetheless, between individualists (who emphasize the sacred status of the individual) and collectivists (who emphasize the sacred status of the group) exist a panoply of schools of thought that derive their impetus from the philosophical shades — the gray overlapping areas, which are today found in the perpetual disputes between individualists and communitarians.
Politically, socialists claim that the free market system (capitalism) should be replaced or reformed, with most arguing for a radical redistribution of resources (usually to ‘workers’ — i.e., those socialists deem who do not presently own anything) and for the state or some form of democratic institution to take over the running of the economy.

Having had their political power-sharing proposals rejected (Canada's final constitution does not provide a political role for indigenous governments in the confederation) indigenous nations still claiming sovereignty have now the alternatives of seeking political association with a state or seeking total independence.
The political vacuum into which indigenous nations have been thrust is analogous to the conditions experienced by the Timorese peoples when Portugal withdrew from East Timor, in the 1970's, after a long period of colonial occupation.
Even though an indigenous nation may seek bi-lateral negotiations as a means of peacefully defining their political status in relation to the State of Canada, and the other nations of the world, there is no guarantee that the State of Canada or the other nations will be as responsible.

Plebiscites have been held on the political status of Puerto Rico, but the results are seen as inconclusive for a number of reasons.
11/14/93 Results of the political status plebiscite (which was authorized by the legislature and governor of Puerto Rico) were 826,326 votes for commonwealth (48.6%), 788,296 for statehood (46.3%), and 75,620 for independence (4.4%).
A major provision of the bill is the call for a plebiscite to be held in Puerto Rico by December 1998, at which voters would indicate their political status preference for either commonwealth or full self government (i.e., independence/free association or statehood).

The need to align political status with emotional reality
The need to align political status with emotional reality is the core, the essence of the dilemma that keeps Puerto Rico etched in indecision.
When political status and emotional reality are out of joint, psychological dislocation results and persistent unease prevails.
The political party that correctly senses this, and properly presents the case for P.R. independence, could gain valuable leverage with the key Hispanic vote in the U.S. Another potential source of support could be the many Puerto Ricans attending stateside colleges and universities.

Political status of Taiwan - Pictures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The political status of Taiwan is controversial due to questions about whether Taiwan should remain part of the Republic of China, become part of the People's Republic of China, or become an independent Republic of Taiwan.
When given a choice between the three options of independence, status quo, or unification, typical results of recent polls show 20% in favor of independence, 15% in favor of unification, and about 50% in favor of status quo.
Poll results also tend to be extremely sensitive to how the questions are phrased and what options are given, and there is a tendency by all political parties to spin the results to support their point of view.

Ironically, the study further points out that New York has the highest ranking for women's access to institutional resources in politics because the state has a Commission for Women and a bipartisan Legislative Women's Caucus, where elected officials hold formal meetings to discuss issues that are critical to women, their families and their work.
