Politicide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Politicide is a neologism, literally translated as "political murder".
It is similar to genocide, but different in that politicide does not specifically target ethnic, racial or cultural groups.
He defines "the politicide of the Palestinian people, a gradual but systematic attempt to cause their annihilation as an independent political and social entity".

Politicide is a process whose ultimate aim is to destroy a certain people’s prospects - indeed, their very will - for legitimate self-determination and sovereignty over land they consider their homeland.
Politicide includes a mixture of martial, political, social and psychological measures.
Like many other immigrant-settler societies it was born in sin, on the ruins of another culture that had suffered politicide and partial ethnic cleansing - although the Zionist state did not succeed in annihilating the rival indigenous culture, as many other immigrant-settler societies have done.

Politicide itself is too brief, and bears too many signs of haste in the writing, to be a really effective arraignment of Sharon's career.
Kimmerling's coinage of "politicide" is useful, partly as a way out of the unproductive, sometimes hysterical exchange of accusations that Israeli policies towards Palestinians, or vice versa, are genocidal.
Politicide is padded with extracts from human rights reports and soldiers' letters--suggesting a rushed attempt to turn an essay into a book.

Politicide is certainly critical of the Isrealis, but it's a reasonably level account; as much as the Isrealis point out that they've been attacked by their neighbors and Palestinian "terrorists", Isreal has launched many of it's own offensives since 1948.

Democratic Peace: It's Democide, Not Politicide
Politicide is not genocide, which is the attempt to eliminate in whole or in part people because of their race, nationality, ethnicity, or religion.
The problem with equating politicide with democide is the killing that is thereby omitted.
And in research on the democratic peace, it is especially important to distinguish politicide from democide -- that is, murder for political purposes from wanton murder.

Clearly, there was a genocide (Tutsi were targeted and killed because of their ethnicity), but there was something else as well, which when considered simultaneously complicates use of the phrase to describe the whole event.
To address this complexity, we preferred to employ the label politicide for it highlights the fact that the regime at the time massacred their citizens for "political" reasons (some of which were ethnic and some of which were not).
Politicide is the mass killing of political opponents and that certainly happened as well.

 The Politicide of Palestinian People
This can only be defined as the politicide of the Palestinian people, a gradual but systematic attempt to cause their annihilation as an independent political and social entity.
Such a war could distract the Israeli public from the severe economic and social crisis within Israel (such as a high unemployment rate and the beginnings of hyperinflation) and serve as a cover for uprooting large numbers of Palestinians from the land, as happened during the 1948 war.
However, the international community, including the United States, will soon recognize that in an era during which every nation (including the Jewish and Palestinian nations) has the right to self-determination, politicide is a crime against humanity that is very close in its severity to genocide.

For Kimmerling, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon embodies politicide in Israeli thought and action, from the 1948 war to the 1982 invasion of Lebanon and the virtual war against the Palestinian Authority carried out by Sharon since 2001.
Politicide is by definition incompatible with a two-state solution and in its extreme form could lead to partial or total ethnic cleansing.
It should be emphasized that Kimmerling's little book on Israel's "politicidal" temptation, although far from the mainstream of Israeli and U.S. thought, is insightful, informative, and, yes, judiciously balanced.

Baruch Kimmerling's Politicide: Ariel Sharon's War Against the Palestinians is an incendiary, if at times fragmented, political semi-biography of Sharon and his towering influence over Israeli politics.
A sociology professor with dual appointments at Jerusalem's Hebrew University and the University of Toronto, Kimmerling writes prose that is remarkably accessible for the nonacademic reader, despite the profoundly sophisticated reading he provides of Sharon and his distressing legacy.
At times verging on an overheated polemic, Politicide is a characteristically Israeli piece of left-wing political analysis not unlike an op-ed piece in Israel's leading daily, Ha'aretz, extended to a book-length treatise.
