history of dominica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Dominica’s History and Politics are two subjects that become intertwined with each other as the politics have controlled the history of the island since before Columbus discovered it in 1493.
However, these political changes were minor because they did little to alter the fundamental problems, which faced the majority of the population; these problems were that little had changed in the social and economic class structure since the days of slavery.
One accomplishment for Dominica’s natives occurred in 1903, as a 3,700-acre reservation on the northeastern tip of the island was given to the remaining 3,000 original Caribs that still lived there for agricultural and living purposes.

Douglas, a single father of four children, had been a target of criticism from his political rivals, for the fact that he was not employed in any professional field, an accusation, which he casually brushed aside.

Bert Thomas: OPPOSITION POLITICS IN DOMINICA: HOW LABOUR CAME TO POWER
Most analyses of Caribbean politics tend to focus on the political faction which happens to be in control of the state, while little attention is paid to the official political opposition.
Obviously, the niceties of democratic political structures are to be found in the Caribbean, but the cult of personality and limited economic opportunities predominate over structure and substance.
The Caribbean political parties defeated in general elections in the late 1980's recognized that their usual political stance had atrophied and oppositions had successfully portrayed them as having lost touch with reality.
