  Queensland Government
Queensland was first seen by Europeans in the 1600s.  Dutch explorer Willem Jansz landed on the Cape York Peninsula in 1606 and in 1623 Jan Carstens explored the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Queensland's early days were spent as part of the British-administered Colony of New South Wales which, at that time, occupied a large part of the Australian continent.
The physical remoteness of Queensland from the centre of government in New South Wales and disquiet with the maintenance of public infrastructure, further contributed to a desire for independence.

The Supreme Court of Queensland, Trial Division, is the highest original jurisdiction, and the Court of Appeal is the highest appellate jurisdiction within Queensland.
Queensland operates a balloting system known as Optional Preferential Voting, which renders the predominant Australian electoral system, the single-transferable-vote system, closer to a first past the post ballot, which some say is to the detriment of minor parties.
The reverse is true in Queensland, with the Queensland division of the Liberal Party often fighting the Nationals for control of electorates.

Water Politics on the NSW Central Coast at Larvatus Prodeo
Mark has well documented the water politics up in Queensland but here on my turf, the NSW Central Coast, the battle is just getting started.
At the moment the water level at the main dam at Mangrove Mountain is down to 13.8% with total supplies at 15.4% (two smaller dams closer to the coast are at a greater capacity but don’t have a great affect overall).
The reason for the current shortage was politics, the dam was built in a location that was relatively free from ratepayer ‘activism’ which also happens to be a rainshadow.

Why sugar deal is a sticky issue - www.theage.com.au
The Zipf story is typical Queensland, set in an industry that was pivotal in delivering prosperity to the northern state.
Queensland and the Howard Government remain in dispute over the industry reforms, which means that a $150 million industry rescue package - partly funded by Queensland - remains in limbo despite the fact that a levy on sugar has been imposed to fund it.
Katter is aware of the deep historical resonance of the sugar industry in Queensland politics.

Unlike some states and territories, Queensland does not have fixed election dates, so the election could be later in 2006 or early 2007, more likely the latter in my assessment.

CANBERRA OBSERVED: Queensland Labor sinks in electoral rorts - 16 December, 2000
Branch stacking and the provision of assistance to minor parties is hardly a new phenomenon in Australian politics, but some of these practices have developed into an artform particularly in the Queensland ALP where fake names, false addresses and mythical "numbers" paid for in cash by the powerful unions became part of the party culture.
By trying to spread the damage Beazley is hoping that the rorts affair will remain largely confined to Queensland and that the voting public will dismiss it as a "typical politicians" rather than Labor scandal, while ultimately returning their minds to issues which effect them directly such as the price of petrol, taxes and schools.
Fortunately, the general public is not as naive as Senator Lees thinks, and school lunches are not what springs to mind when Queensland politics and brown paper bags are mentioned in the same breath.
