On April 6 a plane was shot down as it sought to land at the airport in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, in central Africa.
The core of the invading force was formed by descendants of refugees who had fled Rwanda during the revolution of 1959-62, when a monarchy under a Tutsi dynasty was overthrown and a republican regime under Hutu leaders was established in its place.
Rwanda relies for a very significant portion of its foreign exchange earnings on coffee exports; since coffee is produced by small-scale producers, hundreds of thousands of families were directly affected.

With Rwanda joining the convention, the African Union is getting closer to its goal of establishing a chemical weapons-free zone in Africa.
On 31 March, the Rwandan government deposited its instrument of ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) with the UN Secretary-General, the Depositary of the Convention.
Rwanda now joins the other 161 state parties - including 40 African countries - that are member states of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), bringing the goal of a chemical weapons-free world and a chemical weapons-free zone in Africa a step closer, OPCW report today.

While the UN insists on an ongoing Rwandan "covert presence" on the Congolese side of the border, the African Union is preparing key moves to ease tensions between Rwanda and Congo.
