Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Paul was converted on the road to Damascus and established the first organized Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys.
Syria's political instability during the years after the 1954 coup, the parallelism of Syrian and Egyptian policies, and the appeal of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's leadership in the wake of the 1956 Suez crisis created support in Syria for union with Egypt.
Syria consists mostly of arid plateau, although the northwest part of the country bordering the Mediterranean is fairly green.

Syria is an ancient region and modern state, officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic, in the Middle East.
Historically, Syria (or Greater Syria) has often been taken to include the territories of Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, and parts of Jordan, but excluding the Jazira region in the north-east of modern Syria.
Around the excavated city of Ebla in north-eastern Syria, discovered in 1975, a great Semitic empire spread from the Red Sea north to Turkey and east to Mesopotamia from 2500 to 2400 B.C. The city of Ebla alone during that time had a population estimated at 260,000.

Six smaller political parties are permitted to exist and, along with the Ba'ath Party, make up the National Progressive Front (NPF), a grouping of parties that represents the sole framework of legal political party participation for citizens.
During 2002, two independent members of Parliament who had advocated political reforms were stripped of their parliamentary immunity and tried and convicted of charges of "attempting to illegally change the constitution." The government has allowed independent non-NPF candidates to run for a limited allotment of seats in the 250-member People's Council.
The judicial system in Syria is an amalgam of Ottoman, French, and Islamic laws, with three levels of courts: courts of first instance, courts of appeals, and the constitutional court, the highest tribunal.

Syria has been the cradle of some of the world's oldest civilizations, and has been part of the Hittite, Assyrian, Babylonian, Israeli Egyptian, Persian, Greek and Phoenician empires, before becoming part of the (Eastern) Roman Empire.
Following the breakup of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Syria was administered by France as a League of Nations Mandated Territory - the French had proclaimed themselves protectors of the region as early as the 18th century.
Syria consists mostly of arid plateau, although there is a small strip with plain along the coast line with the Mediterranean.

BEIRUT: Syria said Friday a US-French draft resolution targeting Damascus and Beirut was a failure, because it was heavily amended before being approved by the UN Security Council.
Syria's envoy to the UN Fayssal al-Mekdad said Paris and Washington "failed dramatically" in their mission to pass the original draft of the resolution, because they were compelled to rewrite it to win its adoption at the Security Council.
Lebanon and Syria say the area is Lebanese and that the Israelis have to pull out of it, but Israel says it belongs to Syria and, therefore, links its fate to the Golan Heights, which the Jewish state occupied in 1967.

Syria's ambassador to the United States, Imad Moustapha, pledging full withdrawal of troops from Lebanon, called Bush's address "a wonderful speech" and said he hoped Bush would follow it by being more supportive of democratic transformations already occurring in his country.
As part of its proposed changes, he said, Syria will release all remaining political prisoners by summer and work toward enacting a law "that will allow all political parties to freely form and politicize and participate in the political process in Syria."
