  Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia formed in 1918 as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, renamed the "Kingdom of Yugoslavia" in 1929.
This situation is now resolved, with the admission of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to the United Nations in 2000.
On February 4, 2003 the federal parliament of Yugoslavia dissolved the country and agreed to create a loose commonwealth of the remaining two states within a union.

Talk:Yugoslavia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yugoslavia formed in 1918 as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929 and lasted until it was invaded by Italy (is this right?) in 1941.
Yugoslavia was unique among Communist countries in its relatively open and free society and its international role as a leader of nonaligned nations during the Cold War.
The political system of SFRY and the Kingdom was so different that it can hardly be said that it was the same country, although there were some elements that could support this point of view - Western sponsored Tito-Šubašić Agreement in 1944 and post-war referendum on political system comes to mind.

The Daily Targum - Politics over Yugoslavia
The scramble by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and The New York Times to label Milosevic's death a suicide by overdosing on the drug Rifampicin is laughable; for years the former president suffered from high blood pressure and a heart condition.
What we didn't hear was that the Kosovo Liberation Army, a brutal terrorist organization, had been conducting murderous raids throughout the region in an attempt to rend Kosovo from the rest of Serbia, and that the Serbian response was a poorly controlled and often abusive attempt both at counterterrorism and keeping the nation whole.
Yugoslavia tore itself apart in a three-way civil war, and all sides committed atrocities, from mass executions of civilians to the wanton destruction of holy sites and shrines.

CER | Yugoslavia: Perceptions and Politics of Poverty
First, as in most of the Southeastern Europe region, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) is traditionally less developed, and as a matter of history, a poor European area that has witnessed the spread of poverty in all sectors of social, economic and cultural life.
The last decade in Yugoslavia's history was not only decade of retrograde political thinking and behavior, it was also a decade of a new kind of economic practice.
It has to be understood that for Yugoslavia, a tremendous poor population is a reality (as it is in most Southeast European countries) and they simply should not be treated only as a social problem.

Wachtel's view of the downfall of Yugoslavia is fairly common in its description of the weakening of centralized institutions and the concomitant rise of separate nationalisms.
