Polk County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas.
Polk County was formed on 30 November 1844 and was named for James Polk, President of the United States.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

All County officials are elected annually for a two year term, must be registered voters, and must reside inside the boundaries of Polk County, Arkansas.
As judge of the County Court, this officer has jurisdiction over matters relating to county taxes, roads, bridges, ferries, as well as disbursement of money for county purposes and "in every other case that may be necessary to the internal improvements and local concerns of the respective counties," under the state constitution.
This officer is in charge of the county jail and its prisoners and serves as bailiff of The Circuit Court.

Polk County was established in 1844 and named in honor of president-elect James Polk.  Located on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border, much of the county lies within the Ouachita National Forest, which is the South’s oldest and largest national forest at 1.5 million acres.
The Ouachita’s Talimena Scenic Byway winds over 2,700 foot Rich Mountain which is part of the highest mountain range between the Appalachians and the Rockies.  Queen Wilhelmina State Park, found along the Byway in Polk County, atop Rich Mountain, and is one of the most profitable state parks in Arkansas.
When workers began laying tracks through Polk County in the mid-1890s, “railroad towns” sprang up and older settlements relocated along the right-of-way.  Although some town names have change, present day communities in Polk County include Cove, Grannis, Hatfield, Mena (the county seat), Vandervoort,  and Wickes.

Actual settlement of the area started around 1930 in the Old Dallas area.Arkanas was made a state in 1836 and legislatures voted to make the county in 1844.The county was named after president James K. Polk.At this time Old Dallas was the county seat.The first court house was erected there.
In the 1890s the Kansas City,PittsburgandGulf Railroad,(now the Kansas City Southern) went thru Polk County.It missed the town of Dallas,but stopped at the town of Mena,about three and a half miles northwest.In a short time Mena became a very important town between Fort Smith and Texarkana.
In June of 1897 there was a county wide election to move the county seat from Old Dallas to Mena.In the the town of Mena the vote was 738 to 1, and county wide 70 to 13.The vote carried, so in August 1897 Mena became the county seat.
