Bohemian historians believe that the polka was invented by a peasant girl (Anna Slezak, in Labska Tynice in 1834) one Sunday for her amusement.

The name "polka" is derived from Czech words for "field" or "half;" in other interpretations the name relates to the Czech term for a Polish girl, "polska," in reference to the krakowiak dance-songs which the Bohemians adopted for their polkas.
Polkas appear in the repertoire of folk ensembles of the whole Poland, including even the Podhale area of the Tatra Mountains (see zbójnicki and góralski for information about this region) from which other national dances of Poland were absent.
With the "polka happiness" providing the keyword to its meaning (term borrowed from the title of a 1992 study by Charles and Angeliki Keil), the dance is slowly gaining popularity as a recreational activity for amateur dancers who relish the polka's lively tempo and enjoy the strenuous exercise that it provides.

 Texas Polka
Doing the polka is fun and great exercise.  Texas style polka is a little slower than Northern style and not as strenuous as the Polish style.
You can practice it by yourself or preferably with a partner.  In Texas, there are two ways to do the polka: the very simple way, which I call the "Straight dance" and the little more complicated Czech style which I call the "Double shuffle".
I will describe each in detail.  If you are a beginner, start with the "Straight dance" first until you get the rhythm down pat.  Then go to the "Double shuffle", which is a lot more fun.

In 1977, The famed accordian player Myron Floren released "Disco Polka." let me also mention that i own that record and that this album is easy listening compared to Myron's take on such a subject.
I recieved the record when my Aunt died, unfortunately, this was definitely one of the few great finds in what was largely christian crap...
