Pollaxe - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The pollaxe is a type of European polearm which was very popular for foot combat during medieval times.
The pollaxe design arose from the need to breach the plate armor of men at arms during the 14th and 15th centuries.
On quick glance, the pollaxe is often confused with the similar looking halberd and Bec de Corbin.

 Pollaxe Training at AEMMA
Pollaxes are a class of weapons that can be catergorized as "polearms" or "staff weapons", and therefore, in combination with pollaxe training, AEMMA also covers spear training as well.
The pollaxe weapons employed for training include 3 variations, one variety are pollaxes constructed with steel heads with sharpened spikes.
Fiore does not clearly describe the proper length of the pollaxe haft which is unfortunate given that the length does appear to be inconsistent in the illustrations.

 West Dragonshire - Pollaxe
The pollaxe was one of the most popular weapons for foot combat during the golden age of the Pas d'Armes.
The name of the weapon is derived from the contemporary English word for head, poll (as in poll tax), and not from reference to the shaft of the weapon, which could sometimes reach eight feet in length.
The basic techniques used for pollaxe translate readily to any slashing pole used in SCA combat, particularly to those with larger blades and shield hooks such as the bill and the halberd.

ection 2:Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Though the proportions of the weapon depended on individual taste, it was said that the overall height of the pollaxe should be one hand longer than the height of the man using it, giving the weapon an approximate height of about 6 to 7 feet.
The main purpose of all staff weaponry was to probe the enemy’s defenses and to stab at the openings in the opponent’s armor.
The basic defensive moves for both the spear and pollaxe were the parry, where an enemy’s blow is redirected with the use of your weapon, and the check, where one would negate the enemy’s blow with a with one from his own weapon.

It went by other names and spellings such as poll-axe, pole axe, polax, or Hache (French meaning axe); however the accepted term is pollaxe.
Generally, the form consisted of a wooden haft some 4-6.5 feet (1.2-2 m) long, mounted with a steel head.
Strictly speaking the flat back of the axe head is called a poll, the war poleaxes of the middle ages have spikes on the back, a poll not being adequate for penetrating armour.

Introduction to the Poleaxe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Unlike a halberd, whose head is a single piece of steel, the pollaxe is assembled from several components.
Many pollaxes had bottom spikes as well, and the one shown in Talhoffer is interchangeable.
Since most surviving pollaxes are not mounted on their original shafts, it is best to look to iconography for length..

Pollaxe (pronounced POLE-ax) rules? [Archive] - Wizards Community   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The pollaxe was an anti-cavalry weapon used by medieval infantry, the idea being that you can't trip a horse even with a halberd,, so in place of the halberd's hook there's a hammer head which could be used to strike the horse dumb before attacking the rider.
Pollaxe: This weapon resembles a halberd, except that it has a hammer head for doing bludgeoning damage in place of the tripping hook that the halberd has.
Like the halberd, a pollaxe can be set against a charge, but unlike the halberd, the pollaxe is not a tripping weapon.

Liberi's Boar's Tooth for Pollaxe - Sword Forum International
Quick question, in his earliest treatise Leberi makes reference to a guard for the pollaxe which is similar to the longsword guard bearing the same name, Boar's Tooth.
Yet in a later treatise and also at a different point in the same treatise Liberi makes reference to what appears to be the same guard for the pollaxe, yet notes it as Middle Iron Door.
The boar's tooth can also do this displacement, but tends to be strong at thrusting from underneath, which the second illustration is set up to do, and from a stronger position for that activity than the first illustration.

My limited experience of pollaxes and pollaxe combat is a live demonstration at the Royal Armouries in Leeds (England), their axes are about four feet in length, if memory serves.
The only example I have seen is basically a pollaxe without all the knobbly bits, you have an effective axe blade opposite a spike, the haft is wooden but is protected by iron “langets” (the iron bands running down the shaft).

Medieval martial masters were concerned with teaching all forms of combat, from wrestling to dagger to sword and buckler to longsword to pollaxe, fighting both in and out of armor.
Their manuals included instruction in the strategy and tactics of combat as well as the techniques themselves.
