Metals and Metallurgy | Encyclopedia of Religion
It required the discovery of the smelting of ores to inaugurate a new stage in the history of mankind.
It was the metallurgy of terrestrial iron that made this metal fit for everyday use.
The beginnings of iron metallurgy on an industrial scale can be fixed at a period between 1200 and 1000 BCE, in the mountains of Armenia.

If you've followed parts one through four of this series on bicycle metallurgy, you've learned a lot about the physical characteristics that are important to consider when designing aluminum, titanium or steel bicycle frames.
It's common to use the terms carbon fiber and composite interchangeably, even though all composites are not carbon fiber.
My guess, after polling a few people in the industry, is that there are probably two to three times as many carbon-fiber bikes sold in the world today as there are titanium bikes.

Polls are frequently used by politicians in democratic countries to determine policies.
One of the few things known with certainty about polling people to examine beliefs is that the results tend to be contradictory, difficult to interpret, and strongly influenced by the human propensity to agree with others.
Since "going to the polls" is a common idiom for voting (deriving, of course, from the fact that early voting involved head-counts), a new folk etymology has supplanted any knowledge of the phrase's true origins in America.

While some independent Western and Russian polling agencies have found that Lukashenko is genuinely popular in Belarus, observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have differed in their assessments of the fairness of the elections held in Belarus under Lukashenko's leadership.
An exit poll survey performed by ([8]) Baltic Surveys, a Lithuanian Gallup Organization, showed that only 48% of people voted "yes" on Lukashenko's referendum, with a margin of error of 1%.
On the other hand, this poll is probably skewed, since the majority of Lukashenko supporters are in the countryside, and the poll was performed by a relatively small team (initially 200, but a significant number were banned from polling by the authorities).

But he displays his own lack of familiarity with how polls are actually conducted, on the ground, when he ignores the second, and in many cases, largest source of survey error--bias due to poorly worded questions, poorly trained interviewers and poorly selected samples.
But another key part of that fix is improving exit polling rather than being cowed by unsupportable claims that exit polling is not useful in auditing reported vote counts by folks who find their cultural franchise threatened when the tools they have been given to use are not quite up to the circumstances.
Only that exit polling is an independent source of data that is valuable in helping us reach a fuller understanding of what goes on in an election and highlights when reported vote counts deserve much closer scrutiny because they are improbable (as opposed to impossible).
