POLLOKSHAWS, a police burgh and burgh of barony of Renfrewshire, Scotland, on the White Cart, now virtually a suburb of Glasgow, with which it is ' connected by electric tramway and the Glasgow and South-Western and Caledonian railways.
The staple industries are cotton-spinning and weaving, silk-weaving, dyeing, bleaching, calico-printing and the manufacture of chenille and tapestry, besides paper mills, potteries and large engineering works.
Pollokshaws was created a burgh of barony in 1813, and is governed by a council and provost.

 Pollokshaws Fire Brigade
One night a building some distance from Pollokshaws went in a blaze, and a horseman was dispatched in hot haste to summon the brigade.
The messenger was a man of more than ordinary resource, and when he reached the fire-station he decided that it would be folly to waste a valuable half-hour waiting until all the firemen were informed that their presence was urgently required.
This became Pollokshaws Fire Station in the Glasgow Fire Service in 1948 and remained in service until the present Pollok Fire Station was opened in 1962.

 John Maclean's Pollokshaws
When Maclean was born, Pollokshaws was a village, though an expanding one, still outwith Glasgow's city boundaries; in fact it was in the Eastwood district of Renfrewshire.
These meetings were covered in the Pollokshaws News, which reported in 1901 that Maclean had said socialism would reduced drunkeness, 'and the diminution of drunkenness would result in the diminution of crime.' A lively correspondence ensued from these coverages, to which Maclean himself contributed.
Pollokshaws Co-op lay just south of the present Library in Shawbridge Road, and more or less over the dyke of the Sir John Maxwell school-again emphasising the "village" character of the Shaws at this time.

Born 26th August 1879 in the district of Pollokshaws near Glasgow.
It was her self sacrifice that allowed John to be educated, and he vowed to use his education in the service of the working class.
In 1900 he joined the Pollokshaws Progressive Union, this was mainly an educational and debating society but also campaigned for progressive social reforms and proved to be a useful platform for John's intellectual and political ideas.

The original village of Crossmyloof was situated in the north-western corner of Cathcart parish and was formed around the junction of what are now Pollokshaws Road and Langside Avenue (the road to Cathcart).
Pollokshaws Road and Minard Road provided the shopping area for Shawlands - mainly in small shop units until the construction of the area's first supermarket by the Co-operative during the 1960s.
As well as the Langside Halls, the ice rink, the churches and the pubs on Pollokshaws Road, the area's main social amenity was the Waverley Cinema until the early 1970s when the decline in film-going led to its conversion into a bingo hall which has now been converted into TUSK nightclub and the Waverley Tearooms.

Thomson took up the trade of handloom weaving, and he and his wife both remained in Pollokshaws until their deaths - Thomson's in 1869, and Betty Burns's in 1873 at Crossmyloof.
They are both buried in the Old Burgher churchyard in Pollokshaws once called the Vennel, and which survives in the middle of one of Glasgow Corporation's Comprehensive Redevelopment Areas.
She was buried in the family burying ground, which also was the burial place of Gilbert Burns Begg, the poet's nephew.

Alongside the Pollokshaws to Stewarton Road and the Auldhouse Burn, just to the north of Spiers Bridge there was a tract of steeply sloping ground locally known as the 'Thorneybank' - from the abundance of thorn trees which grew in the area - this later became known as Thornliebank.
The village grew with the works and hardly a household was not dependent on them for its existence.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 45 year-old man was seriously assaulted in Pollokshaws, Glasgow on Wednesday 16 August 2006.
The 45-year-old man sustained a stab wound during an altercation in Shawbridge Street in Pollokshaws around 8.30pm.
He was taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Victoria Infirmary, where his condition is described as serious, but stable.

John Maclean died on 30 November 1923 at his home in Pollokshaws aged 44, his health ruined by a mixture of his constant political activity, five terms of imprisonment and his period on hunger strike.
John Maclean's funeral march, led by the Clyde Workers' Band, was followed by 10,000 people on its way through the south side of the city to Maclean's burial in Eastwood cemetery.
