Process for encapsulating radionuclides - Patent 3959172   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
X-ray studies of the formed synthetic pollucite show that the centers of six of the oxygen atoms are 3.40 Angstroms from the center of the cesium atom.
In pollucite the lattice of the aluminosilicate forms a cage around the cesium ion which is tight enough to prevent exchange of the cesium ion by leaching, ion exhange or volatization.
Natural pollucite is contaminated with some sodium ions and to a lesser extent potassium ions that replace some of the cesium ions as crystallization centers.

Pollucite, an ore of cesium, was originally found in small fragments with gem tourmaline on the Isle of Elba, Italy (one of the places Napoleon was exiled).
Pollucite is generally clear uncolored to cloudy white and looks somewhat like quartz, but a slightly pink pollucite has recently been found in Buckfield.
Most of the Mount Rubellite pollucite was consumed in studying the chemical compounds of Cs, as was probably much of the rarer Italian pollucite.

Pollucite ore may contain approximately 1% of rubidium in the ore. Natural rubidium contains approximately 28% of Rb-87 which is a radioactive beta emitter with a half life of about 47-49 billion years.
However, while it is possible that your employees could have incidental ingestion of Pollucite ore as part of their work day, it is not very likely that they would swallow 11 grams of ore over the year.
However, if we convert that concentration into a more useable number for your industrial hygiene staff in dealing with Pollucite, a constant and continuous airborne concentration of 649 milligrams of material per cubic meter of air would result in a radiation dose potential from the inhalation pathway of one (1) millirem in a year.

Rubidium, however, is more widely scattered and seldom forms a natural mineral; it is found only as an impurity in other minerals, ranging in content up to 5 percent in such minerals as lepidolite and pollucite.
The direct thermochemical reduction of pollucite ore with sodium metal is the primary commercial source of cesium metal.
In the process ground pollucite ore is treated with elemental sodium at approximately 650° C to form a sodium–cesium alloy containing some rubidium impurity.

Process for recovering cesium from cesium alum - Patent 4469670
The process of claim 10 in which the separated cesium delta manganese dioxide is reacted with an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal salt of a strong mineral acid to exchange the polyvalent metal for the cesium and obtain an aqueous solution of the cesium.
Natural pollucite, however, contains varying amounts of rubidium, potassium, and sodium in the pollucite crystal structure, the Cs.sub.2 O being replaced by Rb.sub.2 O, K.sub.2 O, or Na.sub.2 O. Natural pollucite also contains some iron, usually in the form of an iron oxide.
The crude pollucite ore, upgraded pollucite, or other cesium-bearing mineral is crushed and ground to a state of fine subdivision.
