Topic: Polly Horvath

  The National Book Foundation
Horvath explained that in writing the book, she sought to continue the legacy of her favorite childhood author, Edward Eager.
In keeping with the Foundation's efforts to bring authors into underserved communities to discuss the joys of reading and writing, Polly Horvath visited The Morton School, in Newark, NJ to discuss her work and writing life with sixth, seventh, and eighth graders on the morning of Thursday February 19.
Horvath discussed writing-related issues with students such as prologue, and said that writing is essentially rewriting, and rethinking.

In Horvath's capable hands, readers are left believing in the best of human nature as she switches effortlessly from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again.
Horvath is a winning writer, luxurious in her descriptions, so perhaps she can overcome the problem of audience appeal.
Horvath's descriptive powers are singular ("She felt a terrible wrench at being pulled away from her mother, like a boot being pulled out of thick mud with a great sucking sound"), her uncensored Mad Hatter wit simply delicious, her storytelling skills consummate.

Horvath (long live Kalamazoo!) and attended the same church as her mother (fellow children's author Betty Horvath) I've always been rooting for her to write something that didn't take the enamel off of my teeth.
Horvath adds flourish by cleverly engaging the the reader, as well as the characters, in asides from the commentary.
Polly Horvath's Pepin Family is anything but a usual family group: they get stuck on their roof, searches for cheese in a cow which can only produce lemonade, hosts a 'neighbor-off' complete with dog throwers, and generally introduce a zany edge to living.

We first were introduced to author Polly Horvath with her National Book Award finalist, The Trolls, which you absolutely have to read if you haven't already!
Horvath (The Trolls) delivers another hilariously puckish read with this tale of a (possibly) orphaned girl from a small Canadian fishing village.
Horvath is definitely intent on showing how each human being's life is a separate interesting creation and how we shouldn't write off anyone, no matter how odd.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS - New York Times
Although the central character in Polly Horvath's latest novel, ''The Canning Season,'' is a girl named Ratchet, the story is really about adults -- careless, thoughtless, struggling adults -- trapped in their own misery.
The sisters are failing, but also unfailingly kind to the girls, and the girls help the sisters carry on as best they can, even if that means carting one of them up from the beach in a wheelbarrow.
Horvath makes the most of the comic nature of the situation, but the book, which won the 2003 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, is particularly strong because it doesn't shy away from rejection, loss and longing.

A resident of British Columbia and a Newbery Honor medalist ("Everything on a Waffle"), Horvath concocts a preposterous plot: Thirteen-year-old Ratchet is sent from Florida to spend the summer with ancient aunts in Maine.
Horvath uses dark humor to take up deep themes -- dependence and independence, wisdom (mostly unconventional) and hope.
Horvath pushes the limits of convention on her sacred journey to the profound.

Horvath's quirky imagination and precise prose continues to delight me. Through an impulsive and aimless journey across the United States, a boy almost improbably comes to terms with the balance between keeping peace and allowing others their right to free will.
Instead, Horvath gives us a great deal of fun as she cleverly signals that life can be messy and sometimes you just go along for the ride.

Polly Horvath has always been a full-time writer; she just hasn’t always earned a living at it.
Before she began writing at age 8, she used to play with all the cans and boxes and spice jars in the kitchen and pretend they were characters in a town.
As she waits, she observes all sorts of human qualities in the people who, in some way, take care of her: an elderly neighbor; the school guidance counselor; a wheeler-dealer uncle; and an always ready-to-listen restaurant owner, who serves everything on a waffle.

Horvath's Aunt Sally describes Canada as a place of constant parties.
Though much of "The Trolls" is laugh-out-loud funny, it's also infused with the sadness of Aunt Sally's strained relationships with her siblings, notably her brother, Robbie -- Melissa, Amanda and Pee Wee1s father.
Horvath's novel may be the closest many kids will ever get to having a delightful aunt sit at the foot of their bed, make them hot cocoa, and tell them crazy stories that are somewhere between truth and fiction.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Horvath, Polly - 2003 - The Canning Season Books Review
Polly Horvath has managed this feat before, with her excellent The Trolls, which was a National Book Award finalist, and the darkly funny Everything on a Waffle, a Newbery Honor Book.
Horvath avoids that trap, however, by writing the characters as absolute nutbags and creating an environment where weird things happen regularly.
Polly Horvath is probably the best author of her type, and it's to be hoped she'll keep writing books this good for years to come.

Sent by a preoccupied mother to stay with her twin great-aunts, 13-year-old Ratchet - named for the tool - finds a home on the shores of Maine that is certainly odd.
The eccentric old twins introduce her to suicide and swearing, alcohol and aging, family lore and local color.
Horvath's subject matter - and the flip manner and blunt prose she uses to describe it - straddle a line between refreshing and perhaps a bit too precocious for young readers.

Eccentric Aunt Sally comes from Canada to babysit the Anderson children while their parents are on a trip to Paris and every night the bedtime story adds another piece to a very suspect family history.
The gist of Aunt Sally, as Polly Horvath phrases it in this comic novel with a surprisingly poignant under-current, is that she's a storyteller.
Horvath, a master storyteller herself, skillfully parallels the two generations as she conveys the unthinking cruelty older siblings often bestow upon younger ones.

Horvath’s skill is such that the reader is in collusion with both the author and the Pepins by the end of the first chapter.
