Polruan (Cornish: Porthruan) is a small fishing village in Cornwall, within the boundaries of the parish of Lanteglos by Fowey.
It was a landmark for shipping, and also, in times of war, a vantage point for observing the approach of enemy shipping to the strategically important Fowey harbour.
Polruan also has a block house fortifcation that guards the entrance to the river Fowey, one of a pair - its partner being situated on the Fowey side of the river.

Initially, Polruan is almost a mirror image of Fowey; you immediately find yourself in a similar little maze of steep and narrow streets.
Every time you think you've left Polruan behind you cross another pasture only to find you're approaching another limb of the village; it manages to play this trick by hiding behind the convex slope of the pastures across which the coast path runs.
It doesn't look far from Polruan on the map, and there is the distinct feeling that you have already walked much further than the map suggests that you have.

The last time we walked from Lansallos to Polruan with the Sunday group of Ramblers was almost four years ago so time really does fly when you are having fun.
I well recall a walk earlier in the year when we walked from Lansallos east along the coast to Polperro, steep, it most certainly was, and even the books of the SWW grade that section as strenuous.
On that walk we followed the road uphill to a T junction and then left, on the road to and from Polruan, all the way back to Frogmore, about 2.5 km of road walking most of it along the road very busy in the summer, the only road into Polruan in fact.

Polruan can be reached by car from Polperro or, more spectacularly, by walking the coastal path.
You can cross to Fowey by passenger ferry but do your homework before you go to Polruan or cross to Fowey as public transport to make the return journey is very limited.

 Lansallos to Polruan circular
There was a very steep descent as we followed the curve of the Lantic Bay beach and then climbed up to Blackbottle Rock and good views the the Gribben across the bay.
We followed the coast path and we were soon on the outskirts of Polruan with good views of the entrance to this very popular boating harbour and to Moneypenny beach on the Fowey side of the bay.
Although the wind had risen during the morning Polruan was very sheltered and we had a pleasant half an hour break watching the activities on the water.

There is a foot passenger ferry running between Fowey and Polruan and a motor car ferry between Bodinnick and Fowey.
There are about 35 volunteer watchkeepers who man the lookout between 0800 and 2000 with three four hour watches in the summer months and between 0800 and 1600 with two watches in the winter months.
