Poltergeist film series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freddie Fields and Lynn Arost co-produced the second film, and the third film was co-produced by Barry Bernardi.
In the first and most successful film (released on June 4, 1982), a group of seemingly benign ghosts begin communicating with five-year-old Carol Anne Freeling in her parents' suburban California home via static on the television.
The second film begins with the discovery of this cave by a ground crew, and its existence is revealed to Tangina Barron, the psychic from the first film that "cleaned" the house that is now missing.

Filmtracks: Poltergeist II: The Other Side (Jerry Goldsmith)
Goldsmith added five new themes to the two that are repeated from the first film, with each of the new characters represented by a strong thematic voice.
By the end of the score, your mind boggles with the amount of diversity in the motifs and themes for the film, and this is both the strength and weakness of the score.
Even in the film's return to the old house lot, Goldsmith fails to bring his brass to a rolling boil as he had done so well in the first score.

 Poltergeist II: The Other Side
While not a terrible film, not at all, the film's greatest enemy is that it's a sequel to a modern classic.
Poltergeist I was, in my humble opinion, the best haunted house film ever made, with a top-notch family dynamic, pacing, musical score, attitude, sense of humor, special effects, and and some of the world's best child acting, by the greatest director of children ever, Steven Spielberg.
This film has one of the most effective mirror scares I've ever seen, mostly because we are distracted by the annoyingly bad acting of the two child stars right before we see a bunch of rotting corpses reaching out for them.

Poltergeist: The Legacy Revival @ Slacker's Sci-Fi Source - A Universe of Science Fiction
Poltergeist: The Legacy is a drama starring Helen Shaver (Desert Hearts, Tremors II, The Craft) and Derek DeLint (Three Men And A Baby, Deep Impact, Stealing Heaven).
The series is based on paranormal activity, which is being investigated by a group known as The Legacy.
Each story is unique and intriguing but the series was never based on the series of Poltergeist films (similar to a previous show Friday The 13th: The Series which had nothing to do with the film series).

 Poltergeist—the score
A key to Goldsmith's success is his ability to get inside the fabric of a film, discern what its essential sound should be, and translate that creative impulse into music that will meet its dramatic needs.
Films that indulge in fantastic imagery rely to an extraordinary degree on their music not only to involve the viewer, but also to lend an aura of credibility to the otherwise incredible events unfolding onscreen.
In the case of Poltergeist, Goldsmith's score was crucial in establishing the quiet suburban locale, the innocence of the abducted child, the malevolence of the forces on the other side, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

Although volumes have been written on the subject, poltergeists still remain an unexplainable phenomenon –– a fact that captured the imagination of Steven Spielberg, whose previous films have captivated millions with their gripping reality and dazzling adventures.
Add to this "Poltergeist" formula a cadre of special effects artists, including Academy Award winner Richard Edlund ("Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," "Raiders of the Lost Ark") and the technicians of George Lucas' optical effects house, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and the combination promises to have moviegoers on the edge of their seats.
Spielberg allows that there are some similarities between "Poltergeist" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." "I never believed that UFOs were antagonistic phenomena," he says, "I always thought that they were something wondrous and hopeful.

Most of the scenes that encompass direct contact with the poltergeists are scored very loudly with heavy brass.
Frankly, these moments can be annoying, although the scene in which Carol Anne's first rescue occurs is scored brilliantly with pulsating urgency (as viewers are led to believe that it is the climax of the film --but we all know that those pesky poltergeists come back for another try...).
Finally, Carol Anne's Theme (the main theme of the film) is a wonderfully conceived children's lullaby that appears with a 16-member girls choir over the end credits (I was caught by surprise when I heard the end of that track, by the way...

Poltergeist, which came out the same summer as Spielberg's E.T., is very much a product of its time.
The film itself is notable for the patience with which it builds from the smart sitcom coziness of the early scenes to the SFX terrors that come later.
The Poltergeist series is also infamous for its "curse," which includes a number of serious mishaps during filming, and the deaths of several actors who appeared here or in the sequels.
