Some of the stars in the movie suffered unfortunate fates, for which the movie series has been dubbed as having a Poltergeist curse.

For those unfamiliar with the series, a bit of background: Urameshi Yusuke is a moody 14-year kid who was killed while saving a small child from an oncoming bus.
Poltergeist Report is a decent movie if you're familiar with the series.
Like most anime movies that are part of a larger series, Poltergeist Report offers next to no information on its main characters, so watching the series first will make it much more enjoyable.

Poltergeist comes from my childhood so it will always be a part of me. It was one of the first films I remember seeing and I will never forget it.
Poltergeist is also one of the dumbest movies to be made because there is no way a family would stay in a house AFTER chairs pile up on the table and they hear voices at night.
This movie should be in any movie collectors shelf, even if your not a big fan of horror films cause this movie is for movie likers of the age 9 and up.

In 1982, POLTERGEIST was the one movie that stood strongly right next to THE EXORCIST, as being the second most horrifying movie around.

Poltergeist I was, in my humble opinion, the best haunted house film ever made, with a top-notch family dynamic, pacing, musical score, attitude, sense of humor, special effects, and and some of the world's best child acting, by the greatest director of children ever, Steven Spielberg.
The scares work less often, the dialogue is often quite bad, the story itself is fragmented and illogical, and the overall feel of the film just isn't right.
The Indian hocum is simply laughable and it's hard not to groan at the talk of love being strong enough to defeat the evil one (not because it's a ridiculous notion, but because it's a delicate one).

 THEM Anime Reviews 4.0 - Poltergeist Report: Yu Yu Hakusho
While the original tape I watched was damaged and had some serious video problems, even that couldn't hide the skilled, rich animation that is used for this movie (a surprise from normally mediocre Studio Pierrot).
Now that the rest of the franchise is familiar, we can look at this movie by the merits it was meant to have - and it's not excellent, but it's good enough as a supplement to be worth getting in conjunction with the series.
While a good deal more serious than the first movie, Poltergeist Report: Yu Yu Hakusho will be seriously confusing without the context of the TV series, and therefore should not be remotely considered a standalone, despite its release by a completely separate company from either the first movie or the TV series.
