Conductive polymer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In polyacetylene, but not in most other conductive polymers, this creates degeneracy in the frontier molecular orbitals (the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied orbitals named HOMO and LUMO respectively).
Melanin is the classic example of both types of doping, being both an oxidized polyacetylene and likewise commonly being hydrated.
The melanin pigment in animals is generally a mixed copolymer of polyacetylene, polypyrrole, and polyaniline.

Polyacetylene exists as both the cis and the trans form.
Polyacetylene can be doped with electron donors and electron acceptors to form both n-type and p-type semiconductors.
Polyacetylene is often referred to in the literature as an

Poly(acetylene) as the simplest representative of this class of compounds suffers from insolubility, lack of processability, and insufficient stability versus oxygen.
However, despite their outstanding and promising role in the development of conjugated materials, poly(ene)s based on poly(acetylene)s were never able to fulfill the high expectations.
A major reason for the failure of poly(ene)s in form of poly(acetylene)s in the above-mentioned applications is related to their inherent instability versus moisture and oxygen and their high proneness towards decomposition/rearrangement in the partially oxidized/doped state.

By adding an electrolyte and a third electrical contact, it is possible to alter the electrochemical properties of poly(acetylene) while observing the properties of the underlying Si/poly(acetylene) interface.
Such a structure should yield a variable diode, and permit for the detailed study of precisely how the properties of inorganic semiconductor/conducting polymer interfaces depend on the electrochemical characteristics of conjugated organic polymer.
Work on this project will entail the use of synthesis of derivatized poly(acetylene)s using transition metal organometallic catalysts, the fabrication of semiconductor device structures, and the electrical characterization of these structures using electrochemical and capacitance techniques.

Re: How is carbon used in making plastics
You can polymerize it to polyacetylene which can be called a plastic.
Polyacetylene when doped (mixed) with iodine is used as a polymeric semiconductor.
As you can see it a complicated and expensive process to convert carbon to a plastic.

Strong blue and green photoluminescence and electroluminescence have been observed in the poly(diphenylacetylene) derivatives and poly(1-alkyl-2-phenylacetylene) derivatives, contrary to trans-polyacetylene, in which only very weak photoluminescence are observed at infrared region.
The dependence of optical properties of the di-substituted polyacetylene derivatives such as photoluminescence intensity and electroluminescence efficiency on the molecular structure of substituents and the change of optical properties upon electrochemical doping and their interpretation by soliton model have also bee discussed.
Abstract: Both theoretical and experimental studies in the past have indicated that the charge transport in lightly doped polyacetylene is due primarily to traveling charged solitonic waves along the polymer chain backbone accompanied by hopping from one chain to another.
