Polydactylism is a disqualifying show fault in the Maine Coon Cat breed standard and almost all other pedigreed breeds as well.

Polydactyl's are no different in tempermmant than any other "regular" cat.
Since Polydactyl cats are not a breed per se, and have no true genetic similarity other than the polydactylism itself I see no reason for their temprements to be any different than any other moggie cat.
That having been said, there are health issues to concern yourself with as far as the polydactylism goes, and that is mostly to make certain that the extra toes and claws involved aren't causing damage to the paw pad, or its ability to walk.

I wish I had statistics on the % of polydactyl cats to be found in shelters.
My local shelter, a mere 9 miles from my farm where we have been breeding polydactyl cats for 17 years, gets only about 8 polydactyl cats annually--and these are usually placed, and rarely euthanized for lack of a good home.
Polydactyl cat lovers are out there, love their cats, and will continue to support their propagation.
