  Polyethylene
Polyethylene or polyethene is one of the simplest and most inexpensive polymers.
Their are two main types of polyethene: high density poly(ethene) (HDPE) and low density poly(ethene) (LDPE).
The most common household use of LDPE is in plastic bags[?]; the most common household use of HDPE is in containers for milk, liquid laundry detergent[?], etc.

KCPC Education Resource Web Site: 9.2.1 History of Polymers
Polyethene was first made in 1933 at ICI in England as part of a general study of how chemicals respond to pressure.
Polyethene was produced commercially from 1939 as a substitute for gutta percha (poly-trans-isoprene) as an insulator for coaxial cables, and played a key role in wartime by enabling radar sets to be built small and light enough to be carried on aircraft.
HDPE, a linear polyethene (the linear chains can pack together much more easily than branched ones to give a denser, more crystalline material) was produced independently by DuPont and the U.S. Rubber Company during the war, but was not commericalised.

KCPC Education Resource Web Site: 9.2.1 Polyethene as a Polymer
Low Density Polyethene (LDPE) was the first polymer of ethylene to be made.
Linear Low Density Polyethene (LLDPE) is a polymer made by copolymerisation with other alkenes using Ziegler-Natta catalysts that only has very short branches, so though it is low density it has better mechanical properties than LDPE.
The melt strength branching index is a method used in industrial laboratories to gauge how branched a polyethene is - the more long chain branches are present, the harder it is for the molecules to flow past each other, and the more stress a molten strand of the polymer can take.

Polyethene and pvc are examples of A-A polymers.
Polyethene is not so springy and when it is deformed it tends to stay out of shape, undergoing permanent or plastic deformation.
In polyethene the much weaker instantaneous dipole-induced dipole attractions are only present, hence polythene is a much weaker polymer.

addition and condensation - the former are made from the simple addition of monomers, e.g., polyethene from the addition of ethene, the latter are usually synthesized from two different monomers with the elimination of biproduct, e.g., nylon 6-6 from hexandioyl chloride and 1,6-diaminohexane with elimination of HCl.
The inter-chain hydrogen bonding is much stronger than van der Waals attractions in polyethene so cotton is a much tougher material than polyethene and can form strong fibres which can be formed into threads, which cannot be done for polyethene.
Polyethene does not form strong fibres and cannot be woven into threads.

Because polymers are distinguished by their constituent monomers, polymer chains within a substance are often not of equal length.
Van der Waals forces are quite weak, however, so polyethene melts at low temperatures.
