Topic: Polygynandry

Group marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Line Marriage is a form of group marriage in which the family unit continues to add new spouses of both sexes over time so that the marriage does not end.
Group marriage is occasionally called polygynandry, from a combination of the words polygyny and polyandry.
Group marriage is judged by some experts to be rare in traditional societies.

COPULATION PATTERNS AND SPERM COMPETITION IN THE POLYGYNANDROUS SMITH'S LONGSPUR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
I called this mating system polygynandry be- cause females associated and copulated with two or three males for a single nesting attempt dur- ing which those same males associated and cop- ulated with one to three females.
Although the benefits of fathering offspring in secondary nests appears to lessen the costs of sharing paternity at a primary nest, that gained at a secondary nest would seem an even trade, and it is difficult to understand how and why such a system could have evolved.
Polygynandry in Dunnocks is thought to re- suit from the inability of males to defend a ter- ritory that encompasses the exclusive range of at least a single female (Davies and Lundberg 1985).

Polygynandry (group mating) is the rarest mating form, right behind polyandry.
In certain parts of Asia, where it occurs most frequently (though even then, it's still extremely rare), the case is one in which a young girl is married off to several men, who are often brothers, of widely varying ages, from pre- to post-adolescent.
As Pierre van den Berghe explains, polyandry and polygynandry are hardly the

 HEADING 1
Explain the conditions (ecological or social) under which the mating system of the male dunnock might be variously described as i) monogamous, ii) polygynous, or iii) a case of polygynandry.
In some instances the female may be able to mate with several males whose territories lie within her home range.
The above is really invoking only ecological conditions but social conditions could influence the sexual pairings of the dunnock: female dunnocks mate frequently and by 'flirting' with males other than their primary mate they can obtain help from these males in the raising of a second clutch.

Is there Romance left in nature, or is nature governed by so many instinctual selective devices that animals act more or less like machines run on a computer program?
Polygynandry: Males pair with many females and females pair with several males.

Polygynandry in Pseudotropheus zebra, a cichlid fish from Lake Malawi.
Parental care in the Malawian cichlid fish Pseudotropheus zebra 'BB' is extensive and exclusively maternal; males contribute only genetic material.
It should also result in elevation of effective population sizes, and thus be antagonistic to runaway evolution of male secondary sexual characteristics, but not necessarily to other modes of sexual selection.

 Pacific Views: Acorn Woodpeckers
Polygynandry In a very few species, individual females may end up paired with more than one male, and males may pair with more than one female.
This complex breeding system, called polygynandry, has been best studied in a European songbird called the Hedge Accentor (Prunella modularis).
I didn't even know the word Polygynandry nor that its behavior existed in birds--but observing these acorn woodpeckers and the way they were caring for the young in the nest seemed an oddity.
